We are absolutely heartbroken over the loss of Nihon Menpu president Mr. Shinji Kawai 😔it was such an honor and a privilege to have been in his presence and felt his passion for the craft of producing the highest quality denim in the world. He welcomed us joyfully and with open arms to visit his factory and see the process with our own eyes. What a special experience for which will be forever grateful 💙お疲れ様でした🙏🙇‍♀️💙

When I discovered in 2018 via NHK that not only was there was a couple in Hachioji named Kristen and Kenji who had a restaurant specializing in one of my absolute favorite foods-eel-but that there was also a small family-run jacquard weaving mill there, I insisted to my husband Kenji that we visit this quiet suburb of Tokyo. The bittersweetness of returning after 8 years was outshone by the joy of finding that in spite of the increasing challenges affecting our industry, particularly in Japan, this mill is still at it, and although orders have decreased due to the stagnant domestic economy their fabrics are as beautiful as ever. Here are some new treasures we brought back. I didn’t have time to stop at Okami for Unagi this time but all the more reason to return🖤
