Wigwam is born.

Through years of research, varied and extensive, the home ultimately drew its greatest inspiration from historic structures found across the Hudson Valley: simple barns, small cabins, traditional homes, and the Native American wigwam after which it is named. From the beginning (2022), the goal was to create a unique, high-performing design that still captured the essence of domestic life.

Deliberately restrained, the house is shaped to the minimum size necessary to comfortably accommodate an average-sized family. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms are contained within a 40-by-40-foot cubic form, organized around one expansive, double-height interior room. At its center, a skylight oculus draws natural light deep into the house, while a sculptural stair winds around the fireplace below.

Set on 3.5 acres, the property takes a sensitive approach to site planning and landscape design. Within the wooded hillside setting, native grasses and permeable hardscape surround the house, with only the minimum clearing necessary. A natural clearing provides access to the Stone Church River downhill. Architecture and nature forged into an experience that is emblematic, contemporary, and inspired.

A whole-house renovation of a 1999 mountain home in Breckenridge, Colorado is complete.

The project focused on three main areas where the original house fell short: the kitchen, foyer, and primary suite. To modernize the home, we took great liberty with the floor plan—reframing the structure in select areas and repositioning windows and doors to bring the surrounding Tenmile Range closer to the interiors.

The clients’ lifestyle and design choices were inspired by Scandinavian and Mountain West aesthetics. Natural wood, stone, bronze, and handmade copper complement a clean organizational system of millwork and built-in appliances. Lighting was designed to be ambient and intimate, with moments of contrast that bring the architecture to life.

The Breckenridge project marked a shift in Andre’s career—from years of large-scale commercial work into a finer level of residential design and on-site ex*****on. It became an opportunity to bring together a broader range of expertise and define our approach to work that is highly functional, tactile, and contextual.

Border Town () has transformed a corner storefront in Greenpoint into a vibrant establishment for Sonoran-style cooking, working with Andre Architecture to lead the architectural, interior design, and planning for the 1,000 SF space.

Together, they created a flexible and dynamic environment that shifts throughout the day and night, utilizing built-in oak counters and banquettes to define the perimeter of the room, with movable seating and open space at the center to accommodate different groups and events. Two distinct bars—the AM and PM bars—support the different uses throughout the day: a tortilla-making station doubles as part of the ordering experience, while a full-service drinks bar creates an island for communal, casual eating.

Handmade clay tile, textured plaster, solid oak, and salvaged wood bring warmth, texture, and a sense of craft to the space, drawing from Mexican hospitality and traditional craft.

At night, the yellow storefront glows along Nassau Avenue like a lantern—a new commercial anchor celebrating Mexican-American culture as an integral part of the neighborhood.

Andre Architecture and Good Hotels are converting a historic 1880s brownstone in Central Harlem into a 14-key hotel serving short-term travelers and residents in transition. The project demonstrates how a modest 20-by-100-foot residential lot can support meaningful density through the utilization of a 1929 Multiple Dwelling Class B provision—enabling the creation of micro-sized efficiency units where modern code would not permit them.

Slated for completion by the end of the year, the redevelopment reflects Good Hotels’ ethos of using smart planning, technology, and design to make stays efficient, affordable, and comfortable. Andre Architecture’s design reinforces this approach, layering old and new through use of rich tones of color, high-performance materials, and streamlined furnishings.

As both designer and facilitator, the New York City-based studio is leading architecture, interiors, and styling through a suite of specialized services, including project management and procurement, enabling Good Hotels to operate as its own owner-builder. Working closely with consultants, the team is balancing density, historic character, accessibility, durability, and guest experience. Overall, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design and planning can transform a modest property into a more useful asset for the city.

Pre-insulated wooden parquet blocks retrofit a once-blank façade to enliven the square of Jardins de Caterina Albert. The patchwork patterns are reminiscent of artisan textiles and Spanish arts, but also provide outboard insulation, louvers, and small balconies to improve building peformance and reach climate action and sustainability goals.

Assembly axonometric of a pre-insulated wooden parquet modular block system designed for installation on blank walls throughout Barcelona. Introducing varied wood colors, textures, and patterns into urban environments fosters the social and neurological benefits associated with biophilic design and placemaking.

This work was developed for an international design competition and submitted by principals Andre Gomez and Joseph Ruiz in 2024. Although the proposal was not selected, Andre is now revisiting the concept through a recent grant application to explore easily deployable facade systems that build upon its original principles and give new life to the idea.

This Gropius House facility expansion combines historic restoration with subtle interventions and a new bathroom to choreograph the visitor’s arrival, orientation, and movement. Through adaptive reuse, the proposal reinforces the significance of the original buildings while expanding their contemporary role.

Natural pools and native plantings dissolve the boundary between architecture and landscape, while cast-in-place concrete defines the home—chosen for its strength, durability, and ability to exist in direct contact with the earth. Passive building and site design strategies are integrated throughout, allowing prevailing breezes to move across the water and naturally cool the interiors. Expansive operable walls and deep overhangs regulate daylight, provide shade, and promote cross ventilation.
