Affordable Beauty, is that even a thing? From a research into Scandinavian-influenced architecture appears that beauty doesn’t represent an extra cost in the total construction factors: inventiveness, problem-solving thinking and an unconditional dedication for designing “happy places” are the parameters. And VIA 57 WEST by BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group commission by the Durst Organization stands as a proof of it.

The Well Living Lab studies how indoor environments can improve human health and well-being. This goes beyond efforts that focus on being environmentally responsible and resource efficient. Back to our Beauty as a Commodity series with the monumental symbol of the ultimate city dream: 56 Leonard. Financially inaccessible to the vast majority, it is not surprising for the New Yorker to hear about apartments selling for $3.000/sqft. The x-factor here lies in the bravery of entrepreneur Mr. Izak Senbahar along with architects Herzog & de Meuron and engineering firm WSP who committed to a 11-year project in order to challenge the convention and push the limits of what used to be the way of designing residential skyscrapers.

Pritzker Prize German architect Frei Otto was one of the founding member of the Special Research Project 230, “Natural construction - lightweight construction in architecture and nature”. His life-long commitment in the experimentation of fractals applied to architecture can be summarized in the German Pavilion at the Expo 1967. Habitat 67 designed by the Canadian-Israeli architect Moshe Safdie is our second example of fractal geometries applied to architecture. Composed of 354 prefabricated modules that form 158 housing units all equipped with private gardens and terraces, this complex clearly stood the test of time by proving its relevance in our contemporary architectural panorama.

The Galaxy SOHO designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Beijing is only one of the multitude of architecture treasures envisioned and built by real estate stars Mrs. Zhang Xin and Mr. Pan Shiyi / SOHO China. Great art lovers and promoters of the arts, in real estate they play it “simple”: buy cheap and sell very high. This isn’t surprising since they have been the commissioners of China’s most iconic landmarks with a multi-billion dollar portfolio that just sold as high as its architectures’ worth.

“Canada’s west coast is one of North America’s most rugged environments” according to Bloomberg.com, but since 2014 Vancouver finds itself in the middle of a capitalist assault that constraints the city and its policymakers to choose amidst uncontrolled foreign wealth with thousands of unused apartment towers & the pre-real estate boom era where downtown used to be the urban transition zone between scenic mountains and the lively coastline.
