Most people have never heard of an arc fault circuit interrupter. But it might be the most important safety device in your home.

Here is what happens inside your walls over time. Wiring gets old. Insulation cracks. Connections loosen. When electricity jumps across those gaps it creates arcing. You cannot see it, you cannot hear it, and your regular breaker will not stop it.

But an AFCI breaker will.

It detects that dangerous arcing and shuts the circuit down before it has a chance to start a fire. Building codes now require them in bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and most living spaces in new construction.

If your home was built or renovated before those codes took effect, there is a good chance you do not have them.

It is worth knowing.

AC season is here. Is your electrical ready for it?

Most homeowners do not know this. Your central air conditioner needs its own dedicated circuit. That means a circuit running power to that system and nothing else.

When it does not have one, this is what happens:

→ Breakers trip every time the AC kicks on
→ Other appliances on the same circuit lose power
→ The wiring takes on more load than it was designed for
→ That becomes a fire hazard

Home saunas require a dedicated circuit, proper amperage, and GFCI protection. It is not a plug it in and go situation. Get it wrong and you have a safety hazard sitting in your basement.

We are seeing more of these installs across Westchester. Home gyms, saunas, steam rooms. Homeowners are investing in their wellness spaces and the electrical has to support it.
