Our team recently took a to the museum here in NYC.

The museum, designed by George G. Shimamoto, is the same visionary behind the house design of a property that we are currently crafting a space for.

Seeing his design work “up close and personal” gave us a deeper understanding of his spatial rhythm and harmonious integration of materials that are expressed in his design work.

Five favorite shrubs for fall based upon our work as a New York landscape and garden design practice. Ideal for rooftop gardens and outdoor space in urban areas.

1. Hydrangea quercifolia “Ruby Slippers” / Oakleaf Hydrangea. This is our little gem after 2 years growing from literally a root. We click our heels three times every time we lay our eyes on it. Lol

2. Vaccinium corymbosum / Blueberry.  After you’ve enjoyed the dainty white flowers of spring, been snacking on the fruit through the summer, you then get the added benefit of a great show of fall color. Yellow, orange, then wine red. A much better alternative than the invasive Euonymus alata, know as the burning bush which is commonly found at gas stations and within suburbia.

3. Callicarpa americana / American Beautyberry.  Beautiful and bold it is! Tiny berries come borne in clusters around the stem producing show-stopping amethyst jewels in autumn. It’s perfect for planting in the rear of a mixed border when the foreground plantings lose their luster, the little jewels of beautyberry shine. Birds and deer eat the berries. As with many shrubs, if you plant in full sun, your fruit production will increase.

4. Amsonia hubrichtii / Threadleaf Bluestar.  Feathery foliage turns to yellow and orange,  moves effortlessly in the autumn breezes. Great texture for a garden designer to work with. While not a woody shrub, I included it as I use it for massing much like a woody.

5.Fothergilla gardenii “Mt Airy”/ Dwarf Fothergilla.  This shrub is native to most lowlands in the coastal atlantic United States. The color shifts from unique blue-green leaves toward brilliant shades of yellow, orange and light red in fall.

A wonderful evening dinner bringing together horticulturalists to celebrate Andrew Fisher Tomlin and the publication of The Modern Professional Planting Designer.

From the text…
“There’s is no single way of designing with plants. Different projects call for different solutions, everyone is individual, every project unique. In the twenty-first century, the challenge for planting designers is that we must deliver engaging, resilient, and functional solutions that meet the need for human interaction but ideally also fulfil other ecological roles, such as reducing urban temperatures and pollution, improving and protecting wildlife habitat, creating biodiversity and even sanctuaries for plants themselves. But how do we bring our knowledge and understanding together into intelligent planting solutions?”

Answer…This fabulous, well thought out text provides these solutions !! 😉

THE NOVEMBER 13, 2015 GARDEN, A MEMORIAL SQUARE IN THE HEART OF PARIS

In to the victims, the city of has created a , right in the heart of the city.

A series of coordinated Islamist terrorist attacks took place on Friday, 13 November 2015 in Paris, France, and the city’s northern suburb, Saint-Denis. Beginning at 21:16, three su***de bombers struck outside the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, during an international football match, after failing to gain entry to the stadium. Another group of attackers then fired on crowded cafés and restaurants in Paris, with one of them also detonating an explosive, killing himself in the process. A third group carried out another mass shooting and took hostages at a concert attended by 1,500 people in the Bataclan theatre, leading to a stand-off with police. The attackers were either shot or detonated su***de vests when police raided the theatre.

The attackers killed 137 innocent people.

An in the heart of the city, intended as a place of remembrance, a to these victims: this is how the memorial garden for November 13, 2015 was conceived, like a “garden of remembrance” (according to the City of Paris website). The landscaping recalls the six locations affected by the attacks: the Stade de France, Carillon and Petit Cambodge, Bonne Bière and Casa Nostra, Belle Équipe, Comptoir Voltaire and, finally, the Bataclan. Plans for each of these six sites (eight bombing sites in all) make up the garden, which is generously planted to allow the general public to stroll through.

The project was designed by Wagon Landscaping, with the participation of victims’ associations 130Onze15 Fraternité et Vérité and Life for Paris. A major place of remembrance.
