Two years and one day ago, ABC No Rio volunteers gathered in our empty lot under the baking sun to break ground on the next chapter of 156 Rivington. Today, what was once a dusty, rubble-filled lot is now a nearly completed four-story building!

As it stands now, we're now just six weeks away from construction being complete on the new ABC No Rio!!

For almost a decade, we've existed without a permanent home, organizing in galleries, community centers, bars, parks, bookstores, former squats, current squats, and wherever we could gather. Soon, we'll finally have a place of our own again.

When we reopen, ABC No Rio will once again be home to exhibitions, punk matinees, performances, workshops, organizing, community printmaking, the darkroom, our zine library, computer and digital media lab, communal kitchen, and countless projects that haven't yet come through our doors or haven't even been imagined.

We're in this position because of you. Together we've cleared an $800,000 debt to the City, raised over $2.5 million for the project, expanded the scope of the building, secured major grants, and kept ABC No Rio alive through nearly a decade in exile.

The work isn't done yet. We're looking to raise another $250,000 to complete Phase 2 construction and furnish and equip the building. If you have the means to, please do (link is in linktree bio)

Two years ago we picked up ceremonial shovels and dug dirt. Soon we'll be carrying in boxes of zines, print presses, enlargers, computers, PAs, ovens, artwork, tables, chairs, and everything else we'll need to bring ABC No Rio to life.

Thank you for all your support.

Love and solidarity

Announcing our next (and last!) in exile art exhibition.

Introducing, Lower Intestine:

The city can be conceived of as a labyrinth - an elaborate system of caves - the belly of the beast. The label "emerging artists" suggests discovery - coming up from the underground into the harsh sun of recognition. But what of the interior and mucking around in it? The dark and damp and warmth, the tunnels, the standing water, the bile, the circuitry, the coils of innards doubling back? And while we're at it, what about all the things you know are true but can't explain? 13 subterranean artists examine the guts and hidden mechanisms churning beneath the surface world.

Visual Artists:
Claudia Acosta
Shiva Addanki
Mal Belzora
Jordy C.
Monica Caicedo
Jason Fox
Mark He
Mongoose Distro

The next COMA in exile show is next Sunday, July 26th!

COMA is an open forum for experimental, free jazz, free form and improvisational musicians to get together and perform with one another. There will be solos, duets, trios and an open improv session.

For this event, we have over 25 musicians signed up. If you are looking to get involved, DM us to sign up (open until full) or simply just bring your instruments for the open improv session at the end!

COMA took place every Sunday at the old ABC No Rio and we are excited for that to continue when we open our new space (towards the end of this year).

The ABC No Rio Visual Arts Collective introduces our next art exhibition: 'Art-Work: Balance'.

Exploring the often invisible tension between creative practice and the jobs artists take on to support their practice, the exhibition reveals how labor outside the studio—whether inspiring, exhausting, or intrusive—shapes the artist's identity, process, and output. Featuring artwork across a variety of mediums, the works do not directly depict these jobs but instead respond to the lived reality of navigating survival and self-expression. The audience is invited to consider the cost, resilience, and ingenuity behind sustaining an artistic life.

Opens May 29th 6-9pm
Closes: July 12th
@ The Clemente 4th Floor Gallery (107 Suffolk Street, 4th floor)

Registration now open for Seth Tobocman’s Comics as Political Expression class! (Register through link in bio.)

This is a class for students hoping to express their political convictions through the medium of comics, cartooning, or illustration. Run and taught by the radical comic artist and founder/editor of World War 3, Seth Tobocman.

The class is open to artists at any skill level. The ideas presented are narrative and conceptual and will work just as well with stick figures as with detailed, realistic drawings. But the assumption is that everyone here wants to produce art, not just talk about it. Everyone in the class will be treated respectfully and criticized constructively, as a working artist.

Comics, today, have emerged as an important art form, influencing film, politics and other aspects of culture. Many organizations today use graphic novels to draw attention to their issues. But comics have a long tradition. Cartoonists played a significant role in the American, French, and Russian revolutions, in the abolitionist, civil rights and feminist movements. Most of the pioneers of American comics were from working-class backgrounds.

We will look at the many ways that artists have expressed political concerns throughout history with an eye towards seeing what techniques we can apply in our own work.

First Class: May 17, 2026, from 1:00pm to 3pm (EST)
Continuing on subsequent Sundays through Tuesday September 20, 2026.

Course Fee: $200

To register, see the link in bio (linktree). For more information, email us at [email protected]
