The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais is not an isolated event—it is part of a broader, calculated effort to strip power from Black communities.

For years, ABFE and our partners have sounded the alarm about the chronic underfunding of Black-led nonprofits, racial justice groups, and power-building organizations. Today, the consequences of that disinvestment are impossible to ignore.

As Black-led organizations are increasingly asked to “mute” their identity or are deemed “too risky” to fund, philanthropy must confront a hard truth: this country cannot live up to its ideals if Black communities are not resourced to lead.

Now is the time to reverse harmful giving trends, trust Black leadership, and commit to long-term investment that builds power where it is needed most.

The Leverage the Trust (LTT) National Retreat at Harambee 2026 convened Black foundation trustees from across the country for a powerful and intentional space rooted in strategy, connection, and collective leadership. Held in San Francisco, this year’s retreat created an opportunity for trustees to step into community with one another—sharing insights, strengthening relationships, and engaging in critical dialogue about the role of governance in advancing racial equity.

Through dynamic conversations, including the launch of The BlackPrint series, trustees explored what it means to steward institutional power in increasingly complex and consequential times. From strategy-driven sessions to moments of reflection and networking, the retreat reaffirmed the importance of Black leadership at the governance level—not only as a force for accountability, but as a driving influence in shaping more equitable philanthropic practices.

As the sector continues to navigate shifting priorities and growing resistance to race-explicit work, the LTT National Retreat stood as a reminder that Black trustees remain essential to holding the line and pushing the field forward. The energy, clarity, and commitment in the room made one thing clear: this community is not only responding to the moment—it is helping define what comes next.

ABFE, in partnership with Candid (), has released a new report, From Transaction to Transformation: Three Ways Foundations Can Invest in Black-Led Nonprofits for Lasting Change, examining the extent to which private foundations have—or have not—supported Black-led nonprofits over time and explores the nature of funder-grantee relationships through three lenses: financial support, social support, and human-centered support. The study provides new and nuanced evidence that affirms a well-established trend: Black-led nonprofits experience challenges establishing and sustaining relationships with foundations, which in turn perpetuates a racial funding gap.

Did funders fulfill their promise to support more Black-led nonprofits after 2020? New research from Candid and ABFE shows the increases were short-lived and limited to larger nonprofits.

Key findings from the report include:
1. Black-led nonprofits are less likely to be funded, especially smaller orgs.
2. Post-2020 private foundation grantmaking was uneven and temporary.
3. Many funder relationships remain transactional rather than transformational.
