Some of the best details in this Upper East Side renovation are the ones that were already there.

We had our general contractor save and restore the extensive Sherle Wagner () doorknobs, hooks, and cabinet hardware from the apartment's original 1970s renovation, then pair them with new cabinetry, tile, wallpaper, and paint finishes throughout. The result: a home that feels layered with history, not just renovated.

At this Upper East Side Townhouse, the kitchen got a full reset: All-new cabinetry with a cheeky nod to 1960s Hollywood Regency style, painted a just-right pale blue to tie the whole design together.

Next door, the eat-in kitchen area centers on a custom breakfast table in rich wood tones that doubles as a kids' play space — because a family home should work as hard as it looks good.

And our favorite surprise? An old telephone closet reimagined as a hidden bar, original telephone included. ☎️🍸

Our clients approached us after purchasing what many would call an "estate condition" apartment in a beautiful Upper East Side building.

We took an alternative approach. Elements of the original 1960s renovation still had real charm and fit perfectly with our clients' love of color (pink!) and their goal of a lived-in family home. Instead of stripping it all out, we reorganized the kitchen and service areas and carved out a new study, separated from the living room by oversized glass doors.

In this SoHo penthouse duplex, a rich and layered material palette carries into the kitchen and dining area, where a curved plaster ceiling meets walnut cabinetry and dark stone counters.

Starting with minor plan modifications, Shadow optimized the compact layout by working a custom built-in banquette into the room to add seating without increasing the footprint. The team installed and carefully integrated new MEP, low-voltage, lighting, and AV systems throughout.

The kitchen in this Clinton Hill apartment measured just 75 square feet, true New York City scale, with a range, fridge, and sink that needed to function as one coordinated system rather than three separate zones.

Shadow removed a defunct building shaft to unify the room's three main elevations under a single continuous countertop, interrupted only by a new .usa range. Glass-fronted cabinets flank one side for visible, easy-access storage; on the other, custom millwork conceals the washer-dryer, with slots routed into the panel for ventilation. Hand-painted in a warm green, the cabinetry takes its cue from a hall linen closet original to the townhouse. Open shelving above the range keeps the window sightline clear, so daylight streams across the counter.

In this Clinton Hill apartment, the top floor of an old townhouse, the bathroom had all the constraints you'd expect: tight quarters, no natural light solution in sight. A skylight overhead changed the equation. Moroccan Zellige tiles run full-height, their natural variation catching and returning the light differently throughout the day. A pedestal sink and frameless glass shower enclosure keep the floor plan open.

Wood, marble, and the glow of the original wood-burning bakery ovens. Architecture by .architect in collaboration with , in a former commercial bakery in Nolita that earned City Landmarks approval for its new deep-red storefront, a reference to the 1930s original.

Mother LA, Shadow Architects' newest workplace project, was just featured on Office Snapshots.

Spanning an entire city block in West Adams, the 15,000-square-foot project transforms four former cabinetry-fabrication buildings into the headquarters of the creative agency . The storefront-inspired façade draws directly on the surrounding streetscape: early-20th-century Los Angeles forms and materials, reinterpreted for a workplace built around collaboration. Inside, work areas move between open-air booths, bar-height counters, and acoustic-lined strategy rooms, with white oak, cork, and sisal carrying the material language throughout.

Landmarks approval is never guaranteed. For this project, we knew it would be particularly close.

The addition to this West Village Townhouse is visible from a main avenue through a gap between buildings across the street, exactly the kind of sightline that draws LPC scrutiny. Beyond renderings and detailed elevations, the commission required a full-scale mockup built on the roof before rendering a decision. We built it, documented it, and made our case. Approval came through. For a landmarked building in one of Manhattan's most protected historic districts, that's no small thing.

Construction is set to start within a month. Looking forward to sharing our progress!

This West Village Townhouse’s angular elbow in plan, a result of the building's historic relationship to its neighboring church, helped organize the spatial programming. We leaned into the geometry, keeping the primary rooms at the front of the building and setting the new penthouse volume back from the street to create the rooftop terrace. This also keeps the addition subordinate to the historic facade below. When code requirements for two existing fireplaces couldn't be resolved by attaching them to the neighboring building, we designed a freestanding brick chimney. This constraint became one of our favorite moments in the design, creating a counterpoint to the low-slung penthouse structure.
