Biophilic design meets pedagogy in several schools designed by COOKFOX, where architecture becomes a tool to enhance well-being and learning.

At the Marymount School of New York, abundant natural sunlight and planted terraces foster a strong connection between pupils and nature. The design maintains the character of a townhouse spatial distribution—intimate and human-scaled—while expanded to serve a larger community (pic 1 and 2).

At Mundo Verde Calle Ocho, a bilingual public charter school now under construction in Washington, D.C., the architecture emerges organically from its site, responding to the existing topography and maximizing solar orientation. The school is designed as a living framework for sustainability and cultural expression (pic 2 and 3).

In Cambodia, the Neeson Cripps Academy embraces an open-air approach, with flexible learning spaces accessed through outdoor walkways that capture passive cross-ventilation. The north wing contains science labs, an art studio, computer lab, film and media room, galleries and administration offices. Filtered outdoor air is supplied to all classrooms through energy recovery ventilators, optimizing indoor air quality and boosting learning capacity (pic 2 and 3).

Across these diverse contexts, the common thread is the intentional use of biophilic strategies to enhance student well-being, nurture curiosity, and create the best conditions for learning.

In the last episode of The Architect’s Rolodex by , we speak with Harley Dubois, co-founder and Chief Culture Officer of Burning Man, who has been stewarding the event’s rich cultural history for decades.

Each year, a temporary city rises in the desert region around Black Rock City, Nevada, for the music and art event known as Burning Man. Once the festival is over, everything is dismantle and the land restored as it was following the leave no traces principle. Harley describes how the city’s circular layout developed through trial and error, is designed to prioritize human interaction and community needs over traditional architectural principles. Ultimately circles are better than angles when it comes to bringing people together. Listen to the episode at the link in our bio.

Mabel was introduced to the world this week. These beautiful, passive house residences developed by are taking the "garden apartment" to the next level. We designed the building's public and shared spaces to be oriented around street level and second floor courtyards. Many apartments have views of the gardens and many overlook the historic tree canopy of Penn South.

May marks the last full month when school is in session at , which also means we are celebrating two academic years of our new, 10-story building being in operation. Housing the Upper Middle and Upper Schools, this facility is designed to promote the health of students and faculty. The front door leads to an entrance gallery, forming a welcoming and safe transition between street and school. Conceived as three stacked townhouses, a transparent commons brings daylight to a series of grand staircases stretching from a garden courtyard at the foyer to the top floor. Branching off the main core, we integrated flexible, informal learning spaces and library areas that inspire creative, diverse uses.

HAGS—have a good summer, everyone!

In 2003, COOKFOX joined a massive effort to transform 11 historic but neglected buildings into a dynamic, modern neighborhood now known as Historic Front Street. When .landmarks celebrated its 60th anniversary last month, it created an online timeline of past Landmarks-approved designs. In its 2000s section, Historic Front Street is prominently featured.

Take a stroll down memory lane by revisiting this, yes, historic project.

Under construction: 570 Washington Street and 80 Clarkson Street rise up on the west side of Manhattan. These two towers comprise senior affordable housing and condominiums, and they stand adjacent to St. John's Terminal, our biophilic, adaptive reuse workplace for Google.

Earlier this week, ULI New York awarded St. John's Terminal with an Excellence in Office Development 2025 Award!

Congratulations to Oxford Properties Group for this deserving achievement. Our decade-plus collaborations with you, as with the teams at Gensler, Future Green Studio, Adamson Associates Architects, Google, and beyond, renew our commitments to and passions for biophilic design.

According to the Urban Land Institute, St. John's Terminal "shows how blue-sky thinking, intricate design, sustainability, greenspace, and wellness planning can transform a defunct structure into a highly coveted office space while revitalizing a neighborhood." We couldn't agree more.

Biophilic design turns earth and sky into an open-air classroom. Our studio is currently designing Mundo Verde Calle Ocho, a bilingual charter school campus in Washington, D.C. The heart of the school is a central courtyard, a carefully programmed outdoor learning space. This sanctuary for young learners features native plantings, raised gardens, and nature-based play spaces including a dry riverbed, prairie, and orchard, offering opportunities for hands-on exploration and fostering a deep connection to the natural world.
