Founding partner Rob Rogers recently had the opportunity to revisit an old project: Cody Canal Park in Cody, WY.

Completed in 2009, the design and construction of Cody Park is the culmination of a master plan process undertaken for the City of Cody that outlined a series of proposals intended to link and enhance existing parks and pathways infrastructure through targeted open space projects. It incorporates a range of pathways and spaces, a large amphitheater, and biking, walking and hiking trails.

This project sought to implement a process of natural recovery through a re-vegetation of the site. Native species have been tactically sown within the park grounds: topsoil depths, wind patterns, annual precipitation and natural and imposed systems of drainage and runoff provide a basis for zoning these plantings.

The path of the original canal is highlighted by a bluegrass recreational lawn that takes advantage of the higher moisture content of the canal bed. This green swath contrasts with drought-tolerant native grasses planted on the surrounding slopes. Development of a park on the site marks the return of public events to this location.

Thank you to everyone who voted for Cubefabs in A+ Awards! We won in the “Unbuilt Commercial” category.

Cubefabs™ is a scalable, modular, microchip factory. It is designed to be deployabled across the globe as a distributed network of small scale, compound semiconductor fabs. The project seeks to establish a new typology, to push to boundaries of prefabrication and off-site construction, and to break new ground in the use of building systems monitoring and modeling with the integration of artificial intelligence and factory process control.

Rogers Partners provided enhanced pedestrian connections to public spaces and amenities and created a new identity for this residential, business and touristic neighborhood along the Hudson River in Manhattan and across from the World Trade Center site. Illuminated bench seating, glowing glass shade canopies, a plant nursery, grass covered berms and paving variety create gracious pedestrian areas. Designed to offer more beautiful and enjoyable experiences by day or night, the Battery Park City streetscape welcomes people on their way to work, strolling along in awe of the Statue of Liberty at sunset, on a morning run or out to catch a water taxi.

The project integrates much needed neighborhood amenities with security considerations throughout the North Neighborhood and World Financial Center. Security is seamlessly integrated into the urban fabric at all scales, from urban planning to material details. At the neighborhood scale, the design solution adjusts curb lines, changes traffic patterns, and re-assigns neighborhood streets to reduce vehicular speeds approaching sensitive financial institutions. Landscape provides security for nearby buildings: a combination of earth-backed walls, grass-covered berms, and collapsible paving systems do double duty as pedestrian zones and perimeter security.

After 9/11, revitalizing the Financial District became a top priority for immediate action. Rogers Partners developed a Strategic Plan that laid out the phases of an expedited work plan designed to achieve the critical aspects of both security and aesthetics under a tight timeframe. A unique process of public/private cooperation ensured that priority was given to preserving, but at the same time enhancing the public realm.

The comprehensive strategy combines cultural, historical and financial landmarks into a security plan. Security requirements were conceived as opportunities: the bollard is replaced with sculptural bronze NOGO barriers that also provide seating and a new shallow-foundation turntable barrier replaces intrusive clamshell barriers, reopening key view corridors. Their modern bench blocks and glowing towers have become another visual and physical trademark for this historic area. Adding to a cultural legacy, a long interpretive, engraved-granite curb marks the original 1620 canal and wood block pavers recall the city’s defense wall that gave its name to Wall Street.

The first building on a new formal axis of expanding campus, the Patricia Lipoma Kraft and Jonathan A. Kraft Hall for Social Sciences set new precedents for site planning, massing, and materials on this lush academic enclave. This facility was designed to enable and promote collaboration among the two departments and four institutions housed within.

An inner courtyard mixes fields of native plantings with areas for informal gatherings beneath a verdant canopy of river birch trees, transforming Rice University’s traditional formal courtyard pattern into a dynamic and productive ecological system. The building’s mass and envelope take advantage of Houston’s climate to amplify breezes and mediate the heat and sun. Understanding that the life of a student extends beyond the classroom, Kraft Hall is designed to create diverse spaces for a range of uses, both inside and out. From within, informal spaces are clustered around stairways and circulation routes to foster impromptu meetings.

This week our Higher Ed series will look at the master plan we developed for the

The Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia currently occupies 109,000 net square feet in seven different buildings. These locations are concentrated around the north end of the UGA campus, near the historic quad and downtown Athens.

We were selected to conduct the programming and planning required to consolidate the School of Art on a new part of campus. Fourteen departments and programs will be brought together in a new 210,000 sf building, on a hillside site by the Oconee River, where it will join the Georgia Museum of Art, the Performing Arts Center, and the School of Music. This arts village on the hill will create a dynamic and stimulating environment for the UGA arts departments.

The design for the new building is driven by the need for north light in numerous studios and outdoor work space for many departments, balanced by cost effective double-loaded efficiency floors with 16 foot ceilings. The program connects exterior and interior exhibition space, lecture halls, and over 200 studios to a courtyard that will be the focal point for events on the University’s East Campus.
