Big Dinner Energy: Palm Springs
The Challenge: Creating a spectacular new kitchen worthy of this Class 1-listed William F. Cody-designed house in Palm Springs, California. The space was originally three small rooms- all very "back of house" which didn't fit well into how we live today nor did it take advantage of the technicolor landscape just outside the windows. We were always charmed by those original appliances- all top of the line in their day. Working bi-coastal can also be daunting.
The process: We first went to the William F Cody archives and found the original drawings of the house. We also researched other William Cody designs from the same era- many of them had novel at the time concepts for open plans and materiality. They were more forward-looking than this original design. We worked closely with our local engineer, and to fully realize a brilliant result. Through design and construction, we held weekly virtual and in person meetings to keep all the moving parts heading in the right direction.
--> Scroll through to see original drawings, before photos, construction progress, and design process.
The result: A limited palette that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the house and features top-of-the-line cabinets, appliances, and an original Stan Bitters sculpture, used as a backsplash. The kitchen and casual dining are now visually and physically connected to the decks, pool, and a pavilion (we designed a decade ago), reinforcing the unique Palm Springs way of life.
With the core Cody details maintained, repaired, or replicated, sitting alongside our contemporary planning and details, this project represents so many personal and professional triumphs. To list, we were able to work with a long time, design forward Client whose confidence and enthusiasm never waned. This is a special property, one we are extremely familiar with, and we had an impeccable design and build team. More like this one, please.

It's all here. Color, texture, form. Finishing this space with a rich palette and sculptural forms brought so much joy to a previously dark room with rough edges.

Big Dinner Energy: Connecting to the Outdoors
This project has amazing views. The problem? You would never know due to a cookie cutter 1990's condo layout. Replacing the curtain wall windows and door with a giant, butter smooth slider was just the beginning.

From the start we could tell this place was special, and we had a Client who was all in to maximize the potential of the space. Not only did we open up the plan from Foyer to Entry, we expanded the kitchen into a generous Great Room and connected it all to a gracious, updated, terrace.
The side (kitchen) wall was irregular. We cleaned it up by setting the cabinets and storage in a line and worked with the additional space to create an excellent dry bar and pantry. A careful and thoughtful lighting scheme activates indirect, ambient light layers, further expanding the space.

Summer, East Hampton Village.
This place is poetry. The red malm brings fire, the cyan pool is water. The green leaves, grass, and ferns bring the earth, which carries through in furnishings and panelling. All framed by prefabricated industrial containers. Sharp and organic, all at once.
We brought a unique take on what a modern house in EH could be, with nods to 20th century architectural heritage.

Big Dinner Energy: Gramercy Park

Challenges: Create an open kitchen that also works as a foyer, and incorporate antique Jean Prouvé building panels.

What did we do? The kitchen was designed using components to look like furniture and feel like a purposefully modern intervention in a landmark NYC property. We carried this idea throughout the project, keeping original elements such as plaster crown while cleaning up the ragged edges- such as windows of all shapes and sizes.

Highlights: The Prouvé panels are functional as well as beautiful. We went to California to work directly with the fabricator to carefully reframe them, treating them as the art objects they truly are. Carefully and meticulously they were reassembled as room dividers, separating the public and private areas of the home. Several samples for every detail were considered.

The result is an astonishing, bright and functional kitchen complete with every appliance (including laundry) and an incredible sense of place.

Big Dinner Energy - - - Wild West Edition

Challenges: a relatively small, open kitchen in a custom home full of millwork- this kitchen needed to be chic, functional, and seamlessly designed with the rest of the home.

Scroll —-> for before, design process, and construction images!

What did we do? Replanning the kitchen to also incorporate a pantry was the starting point. Prefabricated metal cabinets (the kind used for labs in schools) dictated the sizes and many of the details. A mid century antique was repurposed as an island- using furniture on legs meant it could be moved if needed but also had a lighter presence in the space.

Special features? The butterfly and newspaper tile backsplash was meticulously laid out and sampled on site before installation. The other materials were kept neutral for this detail to pop.

Big Dinner Energy - - - West Coast - - - Open Kitchen
The Brief --- The existing kitchen was so specific and sculptural, with a dead-end plan that made it difficult to use. There were many different materials and, despite an abundance of light, the space felt dark and isolated. Scroll ---> to see before and process images.
Challenges --- An open kitchen can be difficult to plan in a way that optimizes storage while preserving the open feel. Large (amazing) windows didn't help with this either. A large family uses this space; everything had to be intuitive and durable. We wanted to integrate the kitchen palette with the other updates planned for the adjacent living rooms.
Wins --- Functionally, we opened up the flow, so there isn't a dead end. This way, you don't have to walk past someone cooking or cleaning to get a snack or a drink. We dropped some floating cabinets over the island sink and shot lighting up to bounce off the ceiling, creating an ambient glow and responding to the new cabinets in the Living Room. The walnut cabinets and Dekton are extremely durable (and beautiful).

Adding color in a modest space can go a long, long way. This stylish guest bedroom, *purposefully* not too big, curates a lovely selection of wallcovering, fabrics, and traditional furnishings. Michael Schwab's "Muir Woods" print adds a contemporary zest. FUN FACT: To create depth, traditional wallcoverings typically use tertiary colors for the ground, secondary colors for the field pattern, and primary colors for highlights, creating a three-dimensional effect.
