After my trip to Japan, I picked up a couple of books that really resonated with me. One was about Ikigai, finding purpose and meaning in what you do. The other was a Buddhist guide to cleaning and organizing your space.

The funny thing is, after almost 10 years in business, I realized I've been practicing both without even knowing it.

To me, it's all about process.

Every morning starts the same way. I clean up. I organize. I put things back where they belong. I prepare myself mentally and physically for the day ahead. On Mondays, I'm preparing for the week. At the start of each season, I'm preparing for the months ahead. Before every project, I create a plan before I ever swing a hammer.

A clean space creates a clear mind.

A clear mind creates better decisions.

Better decisions create better results.

Not all contractors are created equal.

A customer sees tile, paint, plumbing fixtures, cabinets, trim. They see the finished product. What they usually don’t see is everything happening behind the scenes that actually makes the project run smoothly.

The planning.
The sequencing.
The problem solving before problems even happen.
The years of experience knowing what comes first, what overlaps, what materials are needed, what tools to bring, what can go wrong, and how to avoid costly mistakes before they happen.

Anybody can swing a hammer. Not everybody can orchestrate an entire project from start to finish while juggling logistics, scheduling, materials, budgeting, design, workflow, customer service, and quality control all at the same time.

A lot of my work happens before the actual work even starts. Day one is often not about “visible progress.” It’s about creating the outline and game plan so the rest of the project flows smoothly with minimal hiccups.

Writers brainstorm and outline before they write. Programmers map out systems before they code. High level contractors do the same thing.

That’s why choosing a contractor is not just about price. You are not simply paying for labor. You are paying for experience, preparation, organization, efficiency, communication, systems, and the ability to turn chaos into completion.

This is why some projects become nightmares and others feel smooth from start to finish.

The details matter. The process matters. The person running the process matters.

Most people think I’m “just” a contractor. But the truth is… I’m obsessed with process.

I believe the condition of your environment affects your mindset, your relationships, your productivity, and even your future.

A messy room becomes a messy mind.

One broken window becomes ten.

One pile becomes five.

Chaos spreads.

That’s why I care so much about organization, preparation, workflow, cleanliness, and doing things the right way — whether it’s on a construction site, in my garage, at home, or in life.

I just finished reading A Monk’s Guide to a Clean House and Mind, which I picked up in Japan, and it hit home hard.

The book talks about cleaning not as a chore, but as a form of discipline, mindfulness, and respect.

That philosophy has shaped a lot of who I am:
• Reset the environment.
• Respect your tools.
• Finish what you start.
• Small daily habits prevent big problems.
• Preparation creates peace.
• Consistency beats intensity.

Whether I’m building a bathroom, restoring a car, writing, organizing a workspace, or just cleaning my grill after dinner… I genuinely enjoy creating order from chaos.

That’s my process.
And don’t mess with it 😄

Here’s a lesson I learned from my dad, the owner of Ritz Look, the one who taught me a lot about business, and for whom my company Ritz Renovation is named after.

This lesson isn’t from something he told me but from something I witnessed him do.

He would always put signs in his storefront window for a SALE, or to announce a new barber had joined the team, or a change in business hours.

However, his signs were always fluorescent (neon) yellow, greens, oranges and pinks, and the text would be printed in bold, black lettering. He had a print shop up the block that did all the posters.

This was back in 1990s. Before internet. Before Vistaprint.

Today, there is no excuse for a business to DIY handmake their own signs… this to me an indication of how you do everything else.

Dad taught me to be professional. Always.

There are so many contractors that I talk to that have no business, no leads, and barely getting by, and this is our busy season!

Sure, I feel it’s slower than usual, my phone isn’t ringing off the hook, but I have consistent work. I have my following. I have my reputation and 5 star reviews.

When I ask these contractors a few questions, I always get the same responses, “uhh I’ve been meaning to do it.. I don’t know how.. I’m not tech savvy..”

In today’s world, there’s no excuse not to have a beautiful business card, a Google business page, a nice website, a Facebook and Instagram page.

My dad taught me to be professional and put my best foot forward.

Dad wasn’t tech savvy. English wasn’t his first language. Dad is no longer here to say it but deep down I know he would never put a poster like this on his storefront window.

Just came out of a meeting with a cabinet place for one of my projects and the guy says “wow, you really know your sh*t”

I went over every detail of the cabinet and installation. So there are no issues or surprises.

I’m not your average contractor or carpenter. My stepfather and I were custom building kitchens from our basement when I was 19.

The moment of truth. The rough plumbing has to be just right before we close the wall and tile. Everything lined up perfectly.

I enjoy designing a kitchen layout. The sink always gets centered in front of the window. Dishwasher should be right next to the sink. I like when there’s a “box” around the fridge,
