Last week, our team had the honor of joining Brisa Builders’ Ericka Keller for the ribbon cutting of Grace’s Place, a new affordable senior housing community in Far Rockaway, Queens!

Working alongside Andy Vann from Paul Castrucci Architects, the Mega Construction team, and an incredible group of partners, we installed an 18kW hybrid solar system with 42 panels to the building’s rooftop, helping ensure residents can age with dignity in a home where rising energy costs don’t chip away at comfort, stability, or care.

This project survived a global pandemic, multiple scope changes, and every obstacle that comes with building affordable housing in New York City. What kept it moving was the conviction of everyone involved that it was worth finishing.

One of the best parts of the ribbon cutting was finally putting faces to the names we’ve spent years on Zoom calls with. We were especially proud to see our own Senior Project Architect, Cait Eggers, speak at the event alongside other project leaders, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and representatives from local city and state offices.

Projects like Grace’s Place are a reminder that clean energy isn’t just about lowering bills — it’s about creating healthier, more resilient communities and making sure more New Yorkers can thrive in the places they call home. We’re incredibly proud to have played a role in bringing this one to life.

Last week, members of our team made the trip to Albany to rally for the ASAP Act alongside clean energy advocates from across New York.

We went because what gets decided in Albany directly affects how quickly NYC homeowners can go solar & we believe all New Yorkers should have access to affordable, clean energy.

The ASAP Act would raise New York's distributed solar goal to 20 gigawatts by 2035 and fix the slow, costly process of connecting solar systems to the grid. It would save New Yorkers more than $1 billion a year in energy costs, because more solar on the grid reduces pressure on the wholesale energy market and brings down rates for everyone.

It passed the State Senate on April 21. The Assembly vote is still needed.
To take action, find your Assembly member at nyassembly.gov and ask them to vote yes on A.8758-A.

A brand new senior housing building just opened in Far Rockaway, Queens and it's running on solar. ☀️💡

Grace's Place is home to 82 affordable apartments built specifically for low-income and formerly homeless seniors, 62 and older, who deserve a safe, stable place to land. Thirty percent of those units are dedicated to formerly homeless seniors, and through the 15/15 supportive housing initiative, residents have direct access to case management, benefits counseling, and health resources right on-site.

The 18 kW rooftop canopy system, 42 panels strong, utilizes every workable inch of roof space to keep essential building systems running reliably for the people who call this place home, and on fixed incomes, that kind of stability isn't a small thing. As our Senior Project Architect Cait Eggers put it, "Solar is more than an environmental choice; it is a foundational investment in the long-term resiliency of our urban infrastructure."

On May 7th, elected officials, community leaders, and development partners are gathering for the ribbon cutting, which feels right for a building designed so that longtime Far Rockaway residents aren't displaced by growth but empowered to age in place within their own community, with the LIRR a short walk away and a solar system built to last.

This is the kind of work we show up for every day, one borough at a time.

Sharing some photos from an inspiring night at the “Solar Revolution Update” with 350 Brooklyn and Bill McKibben about the future of solar in NYC and beyond. Major kudos to the folks at 350 Brooklyn for hosting us in such a gorgeous, uniquely cavernous space that reminded us why New York City is one of the best cities in the world.

The speaker lineup urged that we need to press the NY Assembly and Governor Hochul to pass 2 upcoming bills: the ASAP Act, which could unlock large-scale solar deployment across the state while saving New Yorkers up to $1 billion a year on energy, and the SUNNY Act, which would make balcony solar legal for New Yorkers.

This event was a great reminder of how progress starts locally, with community members showing up and demanding for change together.

If you’ve been looking for a way to make your voice heard, you can call Assembly Member Glick at 518-455-4841 or email [email protected] to urge her to include the ASAP Act on the next Environmental Conservation Committee agenda.
