Over the years, we’ve often celebrated the Lunar New Year as a studio with a dumpling-making party. This year, we broadened the ritual, inviting friends from the design community to join us in decorating delivery bags for Heart of Dinner, an extraordinary organization whose SoHo headquarters and project space we are currently designing.

This is a dark time in America, especially for immigrant communities who are under assault and feeling vulnerable and afraid. Heart of Dinner was founded in 2020, during another moment of deep uncertainty, by and with an initial goal of delivering 20,000 care packages with culturally familiar groceries and meals to homebound Asian seniors isolated by the pandemic. Today, they have made *250,000* deliveries, each one full of nourishment and care, contained in a lovingly decorated bag and accompanied with a handwritten note.

The space we are designing for Heart of Dinner will support this work and more. It will be a place for making, gathering, bag decorating, fighting food insecurity, and building community. At a time when many of us are asking how our work can have real impact, these kinds of gatherings are small but mighty examples. Friends coming together to put creativity in service of care can make a real difference.

The Year of the Horse is about movement, transformation, and urgent positive change. We are proud to be working with this organization, to host in this way, to contribute, and, yes, to test and enjoy a few dumpling recipes too: Classic pork and shrimp, steamed fish, and smoked tofu with mushroom and garlic chive.

We at MKCA wish you and yours a happy, prosperous, and transformational . Please follow if you would like to support their work, or look for ways in your own community to show care and celebrate the diverse, multicultural fabric that truly makes this country great.

A great big thank you to for the fab photos and videos.

A Brutalist villa in the hills above Nice.

We’re deep into the restoration and renovation of a villa on the Côte d’Azur, with major structural work underway. The project preserves the raw spirit of the original concrete architecture while reimagining its interiors for contemporary living.

A key design ambition is to deepen the villa’s dialogue with its dramatic landscape. We are strengthening and extending these connections through deliberate interventions: managing water and establishing new plantings in the courtyards, pool, and pond gardens; introducing a new stair that brings you up to a rooftop meadow; and creating a bridge that extends the house outward into the surrounding forested hillside. Each of these moves reinforces the bond between building and site, allowing the architecture to inhabit its landscape with greater clarity and care.

It’s such a special thrill to be included — alongside so many others who we love and admire — on Wallpaper’s list of 400 people shaping the American cultural landscape.

A great big thank you to for championing creativity and purpose, and for the tremendous honor. And much gratitude as always to the amazing team and our collaborators and clients, without whom none of this is possible.

The roof, walls, and soffits will be clad in a skin of black locust slats sourced from regional forests and fabricated by . Greetings from the Côte d’Azur and this absolute gem of a concrete ruin set in a forest and olive grove high above the Mediterranean. It’s raining on the inside, with no building systems to speak of, has a dirt floor in spots, and the current tenants are frogs, but we are turning it into a house for some very fun and creative clients. No problem, right?

An Andrew Matia appreciation post. This week we are saying ‘until soon’ to , who has been part of our team for six years.

Andrew was the first person we ever hired who we didn’t already know, but he quickly became a central figure, growing with the practice and maturing from a pretty fresh graduate to a leader in the office, as we almost tripled in size. We’ve had ups and downs - neither of us will ever forget locking up the office together on March 12, 2020 as New York shut down - and we’ve learned so much along the way. He’s been an integral part of our team and left his mark on so many projects over the years, and we are excited for him as he takes on a new set of professional challenges.

One of the great privileges of having a practice is to spend time with intelligent, kind, creative people like Andrew every day. We are all going to miss seeing him and will miss his enthusiastic energy, his dedication to making great work, and our adventures on planes and trains and automobiles, in every which direction. Here, a sampling: uptown, downtown, upstate, DC, Milan, Reykjavik, Vermont, and Telluride. It’s been a great run, with a decent amount of smoked meat along the way. Wishing you nothing but the best, Andrew. 💛💛 Don’t be a stranger.
