Sustainable architecture adapted to New York City’s climate and built conditions. Making poetry out o
Founded in 2006, Ryan Enschede Studio is a small architecture firm striving to find a new built poetry through development of sustainable architectural solutions adapted to New York City's unique climate and built conditions. Technical areas of expertise include ultra-low energy and Passivehouse construction, sunlighting, and alternative energy. Additional areas of focus include passive heating an
d cooling, climate-responsive design, and building-integrated vegetation. I believe these ingredients can create a critical pleasure and a returned intimacy with “nature” in our built environment. I work for clients seeking professionally delivered architectural services and high-quality outcomes who demand both aesthetic and technical excellence, and who strive to balance the altruistic with the economic. Although I bring a clear viewpoint to any project I most enjoy working collaboratively with an active client to get inside the needs of a project and together make it into art. accreditation:

A recent extracurricular trip took me up to New Haven, where the suggested event parking was… in none other than Paul Rudolph’s Temple Street Parking Garage! It’s “brutal,” no doubt, and for such a simple layout it was confusing as hell to get around inside, but it’s no doubt super beautiful sculpture and just the right balance of ugly with pretty for me… I loved it.

Circling back to a small but very very sweet little outdoor-spaces-only project that is moving into construction, with some photos from last Friday's visit to Francisco Viveros at Metal Prestige in East New York, who is fabricating the planter boxes. What a tight and professional shop, and such an easy conversation instead of what often devolves into a battle of wills. The work looks great. Perhaps someday I will get to spend more of my days in a shop like this....

More Azores: spectacular and wild hot springs bathing in the ocean, thoroughly genteel parkland hot springs bathing in the rain.

A couple winter vacation latergrams (if that is that still a thing) from the Azores Islands. Credit to my wife for dragging me to this confounding, beautiful place.

Winter beach, Breezy Point, NYC, looking across the Coney Island Channel at Brighton Beach and Coney Island.

Winter beach, Ft Tilden, NYC. This little strip of abandoned military base is an oasis.

Winter beach, windblown sand and spray, NYC. As time goes on it gets harder and harder to imagine ever leaving the richness of this city. But its distance from true wildness is a challenge. I did not grow up with the ocean, but I find myself grateful for its proximity, it feeds that part of my soul.

Looking back toward the rear of the main house. Even without the famous tree blooms, great. Plain aluminum windows, no matter. Casa Gilardi, Mexico City.

A view I have never seen, looking from the living room at the front of the house rearward through the courtyard to the famous swimming pool room at the back. I wonder why the change in thickness of the lavender party wall? Did not get a chance to ask. Casa Gilardi, Mexico City.

The famous shot… with table! It’s actually an indoor pool room. Casa Gilardi, Mexico City.

Ryan Enschede Studio is an architectural practice based in New York City working to create poetry from solutions adapted to climate and existing built conditions.
Technical areas of expertise include ultra-low energy Passive House construction, sunlight harvesting for daylighting, rooftop solar, and renovation of existing buildings. Additional areas of focus include passive conditioning, climate-responsive design, and building-integrated vegetation.
I believe these technics can be shaped into a new language of beauty and pleasure, which can in turn facilitate returned intimacy with 'nature' in our experience of the built environment.
I work for clients seeking professionally delivered architectural services, intelligent innovation, and high-quality outcomes, who simultaneously demand aesthetic and technical excellence, who seek to balance the altruistic and pragmatic, and who desire to maximize impact, return on investment, and long-term performance. Although I bring a clear viewpoint to any project I most enjoy working collaboratively to get inside my client's needs and together make art.
