From our friends at Queens Museum:

THE QUEENS MUSEUM RECEIVES IMLS AWARD!

We're thrilled to share that the Queens Museum has been awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support a multi-year, community-led reimagining of our Central Atrium in collaboration with MIXdesign/Joel Sanders Architect and our long-time programming partner Queens Community House. This innovative project goes beyond ADA compliance to simultaneously engage all visitors, and will specifically benefit individuals who are underrepresented amongst museumgoers. We will focus on creating inclusive design and staffing solutions to allow all individuals to mix, collaborate, and learn together.

“The most beautiful things we design are often the ones whose formal innovation is the product of a social or cultural need.”

Joel Sanders was quoted today in an article by the New York Times' architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, which celebrates the 30 year legacy of the ADA and recognizes the continued work to be done in designing accessible spaces for a broad spectrum of people.

Thirty years on, the Americans With Disabilities Act has reshaped the way designers and the public have come to think about equity, civil rights and American architecture. But it’s only a start.
