🇺🇸 Rail-and-Stile Combination Router Bit (Stacked Combo Bit)

This combination router bit is used to create frame-and-panel cabinet door joints. It can produce two types of cuts:

1. Rail Cut – Tenon + Profile

2. Stile Cut – Profile-Only

Because both the profile cutter and the tenon/groove cutter are assembled on the same mandrel, this tool is known as a matched rail-and-stile bit set in a single stacked configuration. The operator switches between rail and stile operations by reversing the cutter order or adjusting the shims.

🧩 How the System Works

The router bit consists of several key components:

Main Components

Top cutter (profile cutter) → Forms the decorative profile.

Bottom cutter (groove/tongue cutter) → Cuts the tongue/tenon and shoulder.

Bearing → Controls cutting depth.

Shims (thin spacers) → Adjust the spacing and height between cutters for precise joint fit.

Nut → Locks the entire stack in place.

⚙️ Configuration 1 – Rail Cut (Horizontal End Cut)

In the rail-cut setup:

The profile cutter is positioned on top.

The lower cutter forms the shoulder and tongue (tenon) on the end of the rail piece.

Used for machining the short, cross-grain rail ends.

Characteristics:

Cut is made across the grain (cross-grain).

A sacrificial backer board is required to prevent blow-out or tear-out.

⚙️ Configuration 2 – Stile Cut (Vertical/Long Cut)

In the stile-cut setup:

The profile cutter is positioned on the bottom.

The upper cutter simply follows the groove geometry.

Used for machining the long edges of the stile, ensuring a perfect fit with the rail.

Characteristics:

Cut is made with the grain (long-grain).

Determines the final profile shape of the door frame.

The yellow shims serve to:

Adjust tenon thickness.

Maintain perfect alignment between rail and stile joints.

Compensate for cutter wear or variations in stock thickness.

Shims become especially important when:

Stock thickness varies slightly.
