SPAN Architecture

SPAN Architecture SPAN Architecture, LLC SPAN Architecture, LLC brings together a diverse array of experiences and interests as practitioners, teachers, artists and theorists.

Karen Stonely AIA LEED AP and Peter Pelsinski AIA LEEP AP began collaboration in 1998. Their award winning work combines thoughtful and inventive conceptual design with technological and material innovation. Solutions to problems are approached with an open mind and evolve through an organic, collaborative process both within and outside the studio to include the client, artisans, builders and lea

ders in their related fields. SPAN works on an array of typologies including hospitality, single and multi-family residences, retail spaces, offices, interior design, art, furniture and objects. Above all else, SPAN shares a deep appreciation and reverence for design through architecture and art that guides their pursuit of creating superlative work.

Part 7 of SPAN’s Ongoing Series on Biophilia - Conclusion

Across all of this work, the intention is consistent:

To move biophilic design from image to infrastructure.

When we treat the built environment as something that actively shapes human physiology, design becomes a form of calibration. Every decision—light, material, proportion, sequence—has consequence.

This expands the role of architecture.

It is no longer just about form or function.

It becomes a framework for supporting how we live, think, and feel.

If we take that seriously, the question is no longer what should a space look like—

but what should it do for the people inside it.

Part 6 of SPAN’s Ongoing Series on Biophilia - SmileHouse (Healthcare)

Can architecture change our relationship with healthcare?

Healthcare environments are often designed for efficiency, not experience.
At the SmileHouse Dental Spa, we asked a different question:

What if care begins before the clinician enters the room?

The space is organized around daylight and a central garden. Treatment areas maintain visual connection to light and life beyond the room. Waiting areas feel residential rather than clinical.

Nothing is incidental.

Light reduces anxiety.
Material softens perception.
Spatial openness restores a sense of control.

These shifts change how people arrive, how they wait, and how they receive care.

Biophilic design here is not aesthetic—it’s instrumental.
It directly impacts how the body responds to treatment.

Part 5 of SPAN’s Ongoing Series on Biophilia - Hyatt Centric Times Square & Bar 54 (Hospitality)

Times Square is one of the most visually and acoustically intense environments in the world.

Can hospitality foster a richer relationship with life in one of the world’s most urban settings?

The question for the Hyatt was not how to compete with that energy—but how to balance it.

Inside, the architecture shifts register. Light is controlled. Materials absorb rather than reflect excess stimulation. Spatial hierarchy becomes legible and calm.

The goal is not neutrality—it’s clarity.

Guests move from a state of overstimulation into one of focus and restoration. The contrast is intentional. It allows the body to reset without disconnecting from the context of the city.

Hospitality, at its best, is not just about comfort.

It’s about recovery.

Part 4 of SPAN’s Ongoing Series on Biophilia — Gotham West (Urban Biophilia)

Can multi-family housing cultivate well-being and community?

Urban environments are often treated as separate from nature. They’re not.

At Gotham West, the landscape was conceived as the organizing principle—not an amenity.

Gardens, terraces, and planted systems were integrated throughout the building at multiple levels, creating a continuous relationship between interior life and living systems. Rather than serving as decorative gestures, they shape both environmental performance and everyday experience.

In a dense urban context, even small moments of access to light, air, and vegetation can have an outsized impact. They create pause. They offer orientation. They reduce the cognitive load of constant urban stimulation.

Biophilia here is not about escape.

It is about recalibrating our relationship with the living world within the city itself.

Gotham West is one example of how these ideas can shape healthier, more connected urban environments.

KarenM and Dr. “G” Gulati, Founder & CEO of The Well Home, who discussed that “Health is a story over time, not a point in time.” and explained the Seven Layers of Bioharmony: sleep, movement, nutrition, mindfulness, connection, purpose, safety.

Dr. G’s lecture is inspiring and thought provoking.
