Interestingly, the older Chrysler appears to have suffered much less visible damage. Its large, heavy body and traditional steel construction were very different from the lighter designs commonly used in modern vehicles.

Older cars were often built with substantial amounts of metal and had large frames designed around durability. However, that does not automatically mean they were safer in a crash.

Modern vehicles are engineered with crumple zones, airbags, advanced seat-belt systems, and other safety technologies designed to absorb and manage crash energy.

That is why a badly damaged modern car does not necessarily mean it protected its occupants poorly. In many crashes, controlled vehicle deformation is actually part of the safety design.

The real measure of vehicle safety comes from factors such as crash-test performance, cabin protection, and injuries to occupants, not simply how much damage a car appears to have.
