Turn of the century American soda fountain culture, reimagined as a cocktail bar. Poka Lola Social Club at the Maven Hotel in Denver’s Dairy Block.

For this project, we designed both the interiors and the branding. Bold black and white patterned floors, glowing stained glass panels above the bar and a back wall of antique bottles and mirrors set the tone. The brand carries the same playful, cheeky spirit: business card sleeves feature cutouts inspired by fizzy cocktails, and the drink menus take their patterns from the stained glass above the bar.

Thank you The Peak Singapore for featuring 1 Hotel Tokyo, which has received CASBEE S certification, Japan’s highest environmental rating.

For the interiors, we worked with Oya stone, reclaimed wood, washi paper and handcrafted plaster, with more than 1,500 plants woven throughout. The approach connects to the Japanese values of mottainai, satoyama and wabi-sabi, a respect for nature and materials long rooted in the culture.

A modern reading of the engawa for the spa floor at シェラトン鹿児島 | Sheraton Kagoshima.

An engawa is an edging strip of non-tatami flooring in Japanese architecture, usually made of wood or bamboo.

Designed around the hotel’s natural hot spring, the spa and onsen pair monolithic surfaces with a minimal design language. As throughout the hotel, we drew on Kagoshima’s culture and traditions, working with a
palette of natural tones and textures.

An explosion of inspiration: my recent trip to Porto.

Beyond the sunshine and pastéis de nata, the city’s historic and contemporary design and architecture left a mark on me. The colorful, detailed art on the walls, my visit to the gardens of Casa de Serralves and seeing Personnage by Joan Miró all stayed with me.

Scroll through some of my favorite moments.

1 Hotel Tokyo, designed as the city’s ultimate destination.

Upon arrival, guests leave the energy of Tokyo behind and enter a calmer environment. The interiors speak as much to the 1 Hotels design language as they do to the Japanese landscape, traditional craftsmanship and the philosophy of wabi-sabi. Together, the spaces create a layered experience where city and nature coexist.

Interiors for Hyatt Centric Philadelphia, the brand’s flagship Philadelphia location.

Our design for the hotel is rooted in the region’s industrial heritage, layered with our studio’s Japanese influence. An airy, muted palette and
raw wood nod to the city’s past as a lumber capital, while details drawn from its street art, mosaics, and murals connect those roots to the
contemporary streetscape.

The iconic Algonquin Hotel, a New York landmark since 1902.

Since its opening, the hotel has served as both a refuge and a meeting place for generations of literary, theatrical, and creative figures. For the full renovation of its guestrooms and corridors, we set out to create a tribute to that legacy. The refreshed spaces echo the hotel’s long-standing irreverence and intimacy while channeling the layered creative energy of today’s Manhattan.

The artwork throughout draws from the full span of Al Hirschfeld’s 80-year career in New York City, with many pieces not publicly displayed in decades and others sourced from the Foundation’s archives specifically for the hotel.

A private villa embedded in the forests of Japan.

We designed the home in Karuizawa as a wellness retreat set within the trees, a villa that recedes into its landscape rather than standing apart from it. The textures of the highlands carry throughout the interiors, with rugged stone elements that echo the volcanic terrain of nearby Mount Asama. Karuizawa, where town and forest meet, distilled into a single house.
