Our Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) systems can turn the roof, the windows or the curtain wall of a building into a complete, multifunctional, high-performing, solar-energy power plant. Onyx Solar counts on the most extensive and innovative approach to design and implement BIPV applications.

Architecture that transforms. Energy that integrates.

In Lagos, Nigeria, the renovation of Sterling Bank’s headquarters transformed an 80s building into an active solar façade through the integration of 6,500 m² of crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass developed by Onyx Solar.

The project features 3,250 photovoltaic glass units, with an installed capacity close to 1 MWp, turning the façade into a surface capable of generating clean energy without compromising the building’s design or visual identity.

With this intervention, Sterling Bank became the largest BIPV installation in Africa, proving how architectural renovation can also be an opportunity to move towards more efficient, sustainable buildings connected to the future.

A new way of understanding façades: not only as the image of a building, but as an active part of its energy performance.

Fifteen years ago, integrating energy into the building envelope was the exception. Today, in many projects, it has become a requirement.

The discussion has shifted. The key question is not whether renewable generation can be incorporated into façades or skylights, but how to do it while ensuring structural safety, regulatory compliance and architectural coherence.

Our experience working across different climates, markets and regulatory frameworks has shown that successful integration starts in the early design stages. When approached with technical rigor and a long-term perspective, building-integrated photovoltaics becomes a reliable construction solution.

For us, integrating photovoltaic glass is not about adding technology to a building. It is about using existing surfaces in a smarter way.

Over the years, we have worked on projects where façades, skylights and horizontal elements were designed to combine enclosure, light control, insulation and energy generation without altering the architectural language.

This approach comes from experience. After more than 15 years working on real projects across different climates and building types, we know that integration only works when it is considered from the early design stages.

When the building envelope starts working, the building gains long-term value.

After more than 15 years integrating photovoltaic glass into buildings, one thing is clear to us: the most important work is not always the most visible.

Every project starts long before manufacturing. We analyze orientation, regulations, light transmission, solar control, required power, and construction details to ensure proper integration.

The result is an architectural element that generates renewable energy, improves the building’s insulation, and blends naturally into the original design.

Because integrating energy into the building envelope is not just about producing electricity. It is about doing it right from the very first drawing.

At Atlassian Central in Sydney, together with Metz, we are integrating 1,794 PV glass modules into the building envelope. The façade generates power and provides self shading to help reduce cooling loads.

On Thursday 16 October, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm, join us at Metz Gallery, Brisbane. Our CTO, Dr Teodosio del Caño, will share design criteria and use cases across facades, skylights, canopies and louvres.

Did you know that PV glass not only generates electricity but also controls how much natural light enters your building?

This is called Visible Light Transmittance (VLT), and with Onyx Solar it can be customized from 0% (opaque) to 75% (transparent).

That means more flexibility for architects, more comfort indoors, and more energy savings.

After 4.5 years of research and pilot demonstrations in Estonia, Bulgaria, and Italy, the ENSNARE project has successfully concluded.

The project delivered 10 Key Exploitable Results ranging from digital twins and modular façades to hybrid photovoltaic-thermal systems and smart energy tools.

Discover how ENSNARE is shaping the future of building renovation in Europe.
