Furnace and water heater shared vent
Forgive me because this might be a really stupid post, but I know next to nothing when it comes to this stuff. Recently had a partial chimney rebuild and while doing so had a liner put in as well. When putting in the liner, the company also combined the furnace and water heater into one vent. The furnace previously vented where they now both vent and the water heater previously vented in the left side of the chimney and that hole was covered. My question is when one of the appliances is venting (more so the chimney since the output would presumably be higher) what stops it from just venting out the other side and not up the actual chimney? Like I said, probably stupid question, but it’s time to starting using my furnace for the first time since the work got done and never really thought about it until now. Thanks in advance!

Any thoughts on the best way to deal with the last couple inches of these joists where they meet the ledger? I’ve got a couple that are sitting just a little too high and need to come down roughly 1/8 inch so everything finishes out level.

Normally I’d reach for the power planer and take a controlled pass off the top, but the problem is the planer has about a 3-inch lead before the cutter actually reaches the wood. That means I can get most of the joist where I want it, but I can’t plane all the way into the ledger without leaving that final section untouched.

I’m trying to figure out the cleanest way to bring that last little bit down without making a mess of the joist or accidentally removing too much material. I could finish it by hand with a chisel, block plane, rasp, or possibly another tool, but I’m curious what everyone else normally does in this situation.

It’s only about 1/8 inch that needs to come off, and only on a couple of joists, so I’m not looking to overcomplicate it. Mainly want the transition to stay flat and consistent all the way back to the ledger.

For the carpenters and deck builders here, what method would you use for those last few inches? Hand plane, sharp chisel, belt sander, saw cut and pare it down, or something else? Any tricks for getting it clean and level without damaging the hanger or ledger?
