August has been a lot — in the best way. Two of our projects are in their final stretch, which means lots of site visits, last-minute details, and clients who are (understandably) counting down the days until move-in. One client summed it up perfectly: "It's like a party at our house every day!" 🎉

This month's newsletter also digs into the small design details we love most and answers the "do you design interiors too?" question we get all the time.

Check it out:

It's moving day season. Inside this month's Studio MM newsletter: final walkthroughs, the small details that make big design, and meet Fred. 🐢

Ask an Architect is our ongoing series where we tackle the questions we hear most often from homeowners, clients, and curious readers. This time we’re going inside. It’s a question that comes up early, sometimes on our very first call: “Wait, do you guys do interiors too, or is that a separate person?”

Introducing one of our cutest team members.. how many of you know Fred?

Architects can have fun too! 🐢
Fred is our own little "Easter egg" who shows up in all of our final home photos. His favorite spot is by a window, but he loves a good window seat or fireplace hearth as well. How many Fred findings can you spot?

🐢 📸 🖼️

Fred was a gift from my father a long time ago. I brought him to the photo shoot of the first house I ever designed because I thought it would be fun to include Fred in that home. The photographer jokingly suggested that Fred should show up in every home I designed in the future. ...and that's how Fred became part of the team. 🥰

Every project starts with a site, a client, and a set of goals. But the parts of a project we love talking about most are usually smaller than that: how a stair railing gets assembled, how a screen is built to filter a view, how a single color gets used consistently enough to hold a house together. Each project has a unique client and a unique site, and therefore requires a unique design — but the throughline across our work is this attention to detail.

July was a good month, and our newsletter has all the highlights! 🌞

We're celebrating some exciting news — Ma**ca has been included in a book honoring trailblazing voices in the field, launching this fall! 🎉

We're also pulling back the curtain on our schematic design process, tackling the question every client asks us first (what will my home cost to build?), and sharing a look at our recent team day!

Our team came together last Friday to celebrate one of our team mates and her growing family. 💗

We started and ended the day with site visits to projects under construction - with tours from the contractor and owner - and in between we got to have some fun! 🎨🖌️... What else would a team of creatives do than design/decorate onesies for the newest team-member-to-be?! 🐣

Summer dreamin' ... ☀️

The pool here is the obvious stunner, featuring a Hockney-inspired tile pattern envisioned by our creative artist client. However, the pool house we designed as an outdoor play space for the family to gather and entertain is also one of our favorite fun areas in this home.

It’s not hard to imagine spending a perfect summer afternoon - like today in the Hudson Valley🔆 - right here by the pool. 😎🩴

It’s the question that almost every single client asks us — usually in the first five minutes of our first conversation, and usually with a slightly nervous laugh before it. “So… realistically, what will it cost to build our home?”

We get it. Before you can fall in love with floor-to-ceiling windows or a cantilevered roofline, you need a number to plan around. So instead of giving you a vague “it depends” (even though, honestly, it does), today we wanted to take a moment to show you.

What does it cost to build a custom modern home? We're tackling that thorny question on today's Ask an Architect blog!

If you follow us on Instagram, you’ve probably caught a glimpse of what our days actually look like — the sketches spread across the conference table, the early Zoom conversations and on-screen sketching, and lots of inspiration images from our porjects and architects we admire. We love sharing those moments in our stories because they capture something that finished project photos can’t quite convey: the process.

Unfortunately, stories disappear! And a lot of that content — the behind-the-scenes, in-the-weeds glimpses of how a home comes together — deserves a longer shelf life. So today we’re bringing some of our favorite Instagram story content over to the blog, where it can live alongside our more in-depth posts and give you a fuller picture of how we work.

VIA43's Bunkhouse: AJewel Box Approach..
A central volume within the glass enclosure houses four twin size bunks, a primary bed and a kitchenette. Utilized by visiting family, clients, and the studio’s team members the bunkhouse needed to maximize both privacy and capacity. Each sleeping nook orients in its own direction, allowing guests to sleep separately without sacrificing personal space. The result feels both communal and comfortably individual. 💎
