Nestled into the top of a high escarpment, Singita Kilima is Tanzania’s first LEED-certified home. The private retreat combines modern technology with sustainable design, carefully integrated into the landscape overlooking the Serengeti plains and the annual Great Migration.

The five-suite villa is arranged as a series of pavilions that follow the contours of the escarpment. Local stone walls and green roofs create the illusion of a natural rock face when viewed from the open savannah below, and deep, low-pitch overhangs cast deep shadows on the vertical surfaces while protecting from the weather. Over the garage, a graywater bioswale irrigates some of the perimeter landscaping. Within the residence, seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces are individually scaled and positioned to frame intimate views across the landscape.

Hart Howerton’s master plan for Hollywood Park reshaped the 298-acre former racetrack in Inglewood into a complete neighborhood, setting SoFi Stadium and YouTube Theater among shops, offices, homes, and 25 acres of public parks oriented around a central lake.

From the neighborhood scale to the building scale, Hart Howerton designed The Wesley and The Crosby as the first two residential buildings, positioning them along the lake’s edge to establish the heart of the community at the development’s onset.

Five minutes from Wall Street by water taxi and ten minutes from the Holland Tunnel, Bayonne Golf Club occupies one of the most unexpected sites in the New York metropolitan area.

The course was built on reclaimed brownfields along the harbor, and Hart Howerton designed the 15,000-square-foot clubhouse in stone and shingle to suit its dramatic setting. Porches and terraces look across New York’s busy harbor to the Manhattan skyline, and the club’s lighthouse stands as a new landmark at this international gateway.

Our 2026 Michael Cunningham Hart Howerton Travel Fellow, Yana Kim, set out this Summer to explore holiday towns along the coasts of France and Spain.

Originally, modular construction brought these seaside vacations within reach of middle-class families in the 1960s and ‘70s. But it also produced some of the era’s most sculptural resort architecture: Jean Balladur’s pyramids at La Grande-Motte, Georges Candilis’s car-free village at Les Carrats, and Ricardo Bofill’s La Muralla Roja. In Episode 2 of Field Notes, Yana shares what she learned.

How do you adapt a summer home for year-round living, while honoring the architectural traditions inherent to coastal design?

For this 1913 Shingle Style residence in East Hampton, Hart Howerton started by restoring and replacing the materials inherent to the home: Eastern White Cedar shingles, salvaged brick, and cypress windows and doors with restoration glass.

These details extended to the home’s addition, with a primary suite that both carries the material palette and accommodates full-time use. Together, the home pairs 21st-century living with time-honored design.

At The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami, a once-dark entry now opens through a sweeping glass facade, carrying the eye from arrival straight to the water. That connection shaped Hart Howerton’s master plan, architecture, and landscape design across all 17 oceanfront acres. Heavy hardscape gave way to a fountain terrace and climate-resilient planting. A beachfront once cut off by walls and dense plantings now opens through pathways and native coastal vegetation to the shoreline.

We’re thrilled to share that the Belle Haven Community Campus was awarded the 2026 METROPOLIS Magazine Planet Positive Award in the Design for Resilience Category.

The campus was designed as a resilient and adaptable civic hub for the historically underserved community in Menlo Park, California. The project consolidates a senior center, community center, youth center, recreational pools, and branch library into a single integrated campus, and advances resilience across three dimensions: building and operations; climate; and community.
