What started in 2012 with a dream, a sea of Ábaco lot on a magical island, (and got a do-over thanks to hurricane Dorian), has at last had its close up! 📸 thanks to the family for their perseverance and his meticulous architecture, for his sexy lighting, and all the workers and artisans who made it happen.

I had the privilege of spending a week in this truly one-of-a-kind home, set in one of Brazil’s most stunning locations. My friend Walter Cain—after retiring, then returning to Columbia University to earn a Master’s in Architecture—went on to astonish us all with this remarkable project fresh out of school. Every corner reveals a thoughtful architectural detail that leaves you in awe.

Beyond its beauty, the home is deeply rooted in sustainable principles, built with reclaimed materials and locally sourced elements. Together with his husband, Paulo Ribeiro, the interiors are layered with furnishings from across Brazil’s regions and eras, creating a space that feels both curated and deeply authentic—arguably one of the most extraordinary homes in the country, if not the world.

My next post will highlight the guest house, an equally impressive work that deserves its own spotlight.

Roberto Burle Marx was Brazil’s preeminent Midcentury landscape architect who revolutionized garden design by moving away from European traditions to embrace Brazil’s native flora. He is best known for his “painterly” approach, treating landscapes like abstract canvases using bold, organic forms and vibrant plant colors. What a special treat to tour his studio and home outside Rio!
