Launched in 1999, BlackPlanet wasn’t just a website, it was a digital town square. Profiles, messages, forums, music, dating, and real conversation. Long before social media had a name, Black communities were already building and connecting online.

BlackPlanet was co-founded by Omar Wasow, a Black scholar and technologist, who helped shape one of the earliest social networks created specifically for Black communities. It wasn’t a copy of anything else. It was original, intentional, and ahead of its time.

At its peak, millions logged in not just to scroll, but to connect, organize, create, and be seen.

It was more than a platform.
It was a place where community lived online.
