I haven’t been this happy with the changes we’ve just added to the app in a long time. It’s another big improvement in quality and functionality. The last two weeks have been really intense, even though the temperature outside dropped below 5°F (-15°C) 🥶.
For a while now, the models in the app had simply become too large. The result was that the app started losing smoothness and began to lag. This was a problem that was blocking further development.
Two weeks ago we added a mechanism that solves this problem. And as usual, the things you can’t see take the most time - it ended up taking about a week. In short: elements with the same geometry are added to the visualization only once, and then we duplicate them and place them in different locations. This change opened the door for more options and functionality in the models.
It started innocently with expanding the configuration of headers, which we already informed you about through posts on our fanpage. In addition to lumber sizes, you can now also choose the type of the header itself. This is especially useful for wider windows and larger structures (more on that below!).
In the past, we had a few orders for a structure with an attic space - a little “extra” storage area. That’s why I decided we’d add an optional second floor, which can serve as an attic, but also works as a fully functional solution for small houses up to ~350 ft² (35 m²). The app now includes the option to add a intermediate floor structure, set its cross-section, and also set the height of the knee wall. This creates what’s known as a “balloon frame” structure, which is very simple to build.
The last feature is the one that brought me the most joy - the cherry on top. It’s about the benches. Until now, it was only a visualization of a few top boards without any supporting structure, and we changed that. Now it’s a full hanging bench structure available in 7 different shapes. The way they’re added has also changed. Before, it was pretty clunky, and now for a given height you simply choose one of the 7 shapes, enter the seat depths, and you’re done.
I don’t know why, but this part was the most fun for me, even though adding the floor opens up the models to a completely new type of construction.
To sum it up: we’re working and building the best app for small wooden structures for you. A must-have for every homeowner 🙂.
