“What are you afraid of losing, when nothing in the world actually belongs to you.” (Marcus Aurelius)

It is one of life’s most confronting and liberating truths: we arrive here empty-handed, and one day, we will leave the same way. The people we love, the roles we inhabit, the titles we earn, the possessions we gather, even the carefully constructed versions of ourselves; all are, in some sense, temporary companions on the journey rather than permanent belongings.
And yet, how tightly we hold on.

We fear losing relationships, certainty, youth, success, health, control, familiar routines, even the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. Not because attachment is wrong, but because to love and to live is to naturally form attachments. We are human. We cherish, we hold close, we build meaning around what touches our hearts.

But suffering often begins when we confuse stewardship with ownership.
Nothing in this life is truly ours to control indefinitely. Not time. Not outcomes. Not other people. Not even the seasons of our own lives.

This is not a bleak thought; it is a profoundly freeing one.
Because when we stop trying to possess what was only ever meant to be experienced, something within us softens. Gratitude replaces entitlement. Presence replaces anxiety. Love becomes less about holding tightly and more about appreciating deeply.

To understand that nothing truly belongs to us is not to become detached in a cold or indifferent way. It is to love with open hands instead of clenched fists. To honour what is here while it is here. To stop measuring security by permanence and begin finding peace in acceptance.

The flower is beautiful not because it lasts forever, but because it blooms at all.
The people we love are precious not because we can keep them indefinitely, but because we were given the gift of sharing part of the journey with them.

Perhaps the real question is not, “What am I afraid of losing?” but “How can I cherish what is here without living in fear of its eventual change?”
Because life was never asking us to own everything we love.
It was asking us to experience it fully, gratefully, and with enough wisdom to let go when the time comes.
And perhaps that is where true peace begins. 💛
