- A Couple Close Calls for the Hudson Valley -

Tonight, we’re watching 2 weather features. A disturbance will form tonight along a coastal boundary, and race northeastward. At the same time, we have an approaching cold front from the west, reaching the Hudson Valley by Wednesday morning.

You can see on this map, that the Hudson Valley is smack in the middle of these features. The end result may be that our region is mostly spared from rainfall from both systems. The coastal disturbance may spread some scattered showers into the lower HV, but it looks like the best chances are in Rockland and Westchester counties. The cold front will see the precipitation weaken as it arrives in our area. So the best chance for scattered rain and snow showers will be in the Catskills.

All together, most of us will only see a few drops of rain… if that. Most of the moisture should pass to our east, and to our north. But despite the limited rainfall amounts… we’ll start our Wednesday out with a lot of cloudiness, before we see increasing sunshine for the afternoon. Along with that sunshine will come some breezy conditions (winds around 10mph, gusts to 25mph) ... but nothing too terrible that should cause any big headaches.

So after a spot shower and some morning clouds... a decent travel day lined up for Wednesday.

** Arctic Attack Arrives Late Tonight & Friday **

An arctic cold front will race through the Hudson Valley after dark Thursday evening. It will turn the winds out of the northwest, and usher in the coldest air of the season by far. Temps will steadily fall, and by sunrise on Friday the entire region will see temps in the upper 20s to low 30s.

After sunrise, temperatures won’t move much at all… and if anything, may drop a degree or two. NW winds will howl at 10 to 15mph, and gust over 30mph at times. The result will be afternoon wind chills that feel like the core of winter!

These are daytime wind chills, and considering that last Friday 71° in Poughkeepsie, the fact that it will feel like 20° this Friday, is that much more astounding. Our October was very warm, and so many people were questioning if we would have a winter this year. We outlined at the end of the Winter Outlook how what we saw in October is consistent with what we’d expect in similar years. And in those similar years, November and December took a SHARP turn toward a colder pattern. So we'll have to watch and see if the colder than average pattern persists.

- Cold & Unsettled Evening Ahead -

Sunshine will gradually fade behind increasing clouds during the afternoon. The cold will also be on the increase, being filtered in by a persistent northerly breeze. The result will be temperatures struggling to get out of the mid 40s across the Hudson Valley, a solid 10 degrees below average. But in addition to the surging cold… we have a weak storm system developing to our southwest, and it will ride along a boundary on Tuesday. If that boundary is far enough north… like much of the data is now suggesting… we could see rain push into the southern half of the valley by mid to late Tuesday afternoon.

The invading cold air will filter through all layers of the atmosphere. So when the moisture falls, it will fall as snow across the entire region. The problem… is surface temperatures are projected to be 35° to 40° across the region at this time. That will melt a good deal of the snow as it falls from the cloud… but it could permit wet snow to mix in with the cold rain showers in parts of the Hudson Valley. As you go up in elevation, and in your traditionally colder spots… you could see a period of wet snow fall around and shortly after sunset. A slushy coating of wet snow on grassy spots can’t be ruled out in the coldest locations.

Let us be clear…
-- Snow will NOT stick to roadways
-- Widespread snow / snow accumulation IS NOT likely
-- Rain showers COULD mix with or change to wet snow around sunset.
-- A slushy coating of snow POSSIBLE in the colder spots and higher elevations.

This is not a major event, rather… the potential for the 1st flakes of the season. Expect the potential for some wet roads for your evening commute.

It’s been a WARM autumn… but make no mistake… Winter is Coming.
