This pond is less than 3 months old and is chock full of water striders (first image) and dragonfly larva (second image). Both of these animals are predators and require the presence of other invertebrates to flourish. The presence of these two species is a clear sign of a healthy pond system.

There are numerous signs that the landscape company you hired doesn't (or in this case, "didn't") know what they are doing.
If they start setting boulders in concrete, on top of the epdm liner, that is a really good sign they don't know what they are doing.
If they terminate return lines inside of the waterfall and not a weir box, that is a really good sign they don't know what they are doing.
If they set a ball valve in concrete, well, you get the idea.
Demo and rebuild of a relatively new pond. This pond is only 7 years old.
