Delphinium is not something I generally use in the gardens I design. The danger of the big flop is always a thing. Last year I broke down and placed them in my own beds, just to see. Well, they were held up nicely by the surrounding roses and I was patting myself on the back for my bravery. Alas the big windstorm on Thursday put an end to that adventure. So now if have a nice cut flower display indoors. Somehow I actually think the 5 days of bloom was worth it.

I may be guilty of repeat posting, but, I have to tell you. This is one of my very favorite “Nativars”. Calycantus Florida’s ‘Aphrodite”. Aphrodite Carolina Sweet-shrub. The flowers come in late May here in New Hampshire and they are about 3” across. You do need a large space for this as it wants to be 8’ tall, but it’s worth it. One of these in the corner of the garden is so good. I do also have to say that I have a hard time convincing my clients to try this. It’s also a bit hard to find. Our local nursery Wentworth Greenhouses carries it from time to time. That’s where I discovered it.
