Pickleball fills public courts.
Padel just landed at the Sydney Opera House.
And that captures the key difference between the two sports.
Last weekend, a complete Laykold Padel Court was installed here. Around it: UBS, Gucci, Waldorf Astoria, Patrón, HEAD, Heineken, Pommery, Philips, La Roche-Posay, waterdrop and Meta. Celebrities and Olympic champions.
Tickets were just $30–50 AUD.
So this wasn’t about ticket revenue.
It was about positioning.
Pickleball scales bottom-up: public courts, accessibility, mass participation.
Padel scales top-down: private clubs, glass courts, premium hospitality, luxury brands and affluent audiences.
That’s why padel is increasingly being called the new golf.
Golf’s function has always extended beyond the sport itself. It brought money, business and valuable connections together in one place.
Padel is beginning to play the same role — only it’s faster, easier for beginners and always brings four people together on one court.
For investors, these are two different sports with two different audiences.
The high cost of a padel court isn’t a disadvantage.
It’s the market’s barrier to entry.
For us, the fact that a Laykold Padel Court stood at the center of this event is especially significant. Sport Angeles is a Laykold distributor in California, supplying and installing complete padel courts across Southern California.
The audience, venues and premium sports culture are already here.
What’s missing is supply.
