Last Wednesday, we were excited to share with AIA Coastal Virginia our progress with Tazewell Contracting and VA Conservation & Recreation on the First Landing cabin renovations in Virginia Beach. Our regional AIA chapter, Coastal Virginia puts on amazing events and hard hat tours of local work. It was an honor to work with them and provide this insight on a project near and dear to our hearts.
First Landing (Seashore) SP is one of four original Virginia parks PMA has worked on restoring over 100 CCC-built 1930s and CMU 1940/50s cabins. As PMA’s project lead and Principal akshar patel mentioned in the tour, our main goal is to update and preserve these cabin for the next hundred years of use by outdoor enthusiasts.
These cabins required serious attention to detail to maintain their rustic historic charm while providing necessary repairs and updates for their continued use. Live edge wood siding, brick chimney and fireplace work, laser scanning, small-scale living arrangements, and the involvement between the team and state departments were just a few topics discussed last Wednesday.
Working with Tazwell Construction, who helped lead the tour, has been a great experience at the park and we love their shared passion for the project. We are as eager as everyone else to see the final project!
Visit and stay at Douthat or Fairy Stone state parks to see PMA’s completed cabin work, and stay tuned to First Landing and Westmoreland parks as we wrap up these projects.
