With Utah being a desert state, it is very important that we are responsible with our water use. With lawns being one of the leaders in water consumption it is important that we keep an eye on how much we water our lawns and make sure that we are not watering too much. While each lawn is different, Utah.gov has given us a watering guide that is updated weekly that can provide you with a general rule of thumb for how much you should be watering your lawn. "An ounce of prevention is greater than a pound of cure" is the old saying. You may have done a preventative bug foundation spray for bugs in the spring but doing it in the summer is not a bad idea as well. Make sure to keep those bugs at bay with a preventative spring foundation spray. This can help prevent unwanted intruders entering your home. As always, make sure to read the label of the product you will be using and follow the instructions before applying.

It's that time of year when grubs and other lawn pests can start damaging your lawn. Keep an eye out for signs of dead spots in areas where you are sure you are getting adequate water. The problem may be caused by a bug problem and should be treated for as soon as you recognize a need in order to prevent the problem from spreading.

It's that time of year when field bindweed (often known as morning glory or creeping jenny) starts to take over the lawn. One way to take control of the situation is to apply a selective broadleaf herbicide which can easily be applied with a pump or backpack sprayer, or by hiring a professional company for better coverage. Keep in mind that there are some rules when applying a broad leaf herbicide such as PPE and weather conditions to consider when applying. So make sure to read the label of the product you will be using. And remember "the label is the law".

You may have followed our earlier post about applying an fertilizer application with preemergent in the spring. Now is a good time to follow up with another application of fertilizer that does not have a preemergent to help your lawn get through the stresses that will come with the summer heat in the months ahead. Some fertilizers also have a broadleaf herbicide as part of the mix so make sure to read the label and wear the appropriate PPE when applying. If yours does not have a broadleaf herbicide, it may also be a good time to spot or broadcast spray the weeds in your lawn with a broadleaf selective herbicide using a handpump or backpack sprayer to get whatever weeds may have not been affected by the preemergent you put down previously.

You may not be seeing damage in your lawn that can be caused by grubs yet. But if you are worried that you may have trouble with them when they start to feast in the summer months, now is the time to treat for them. The most economical method is to treat your lawn with a systemic pesticide that is designed to enter the roots of your grass so that when the bugs come out in the warmer weather and start to munch on them, it will stop them in their tracks.

One of the things we have been asked to do by our political officials is to be conservative when watering our lawns. Many people ask us "how much should I water my lawn?". Necrotic Ring Spot and other fungi that attack turf do not usually start showing signs of damage until mid to late summer. The time to treat for it, however, is in the early spring and fall when the fungus is most active. If you have had signs of necrotic ring spot or other turf damaging fungi in the past or are concerned that this may be a problem, now is the time to treat it. As always, when applying a pesticide it is very important that you read and follow the instructions on the label and wear the appropriate PPE.

With spring at our doorstep, it is time to start thinking about your lawn health. Core aeration is often done in the spring and helps your lawn's overall health and is a chemical free process. Some of the things that aeration helps with are:
Allow the soil to more freely exchange air,
Allow fertilizers to pe*****te the soil better,
Allow your soil to accept water more freely,
Allow grass roots to get stronger,
Reduce soil compaction,
And so much more.

Spring is in the air and when the weather gets warm the grass will start growing. With the green growth, lots of weeds tend to grow in your lawn as well. One of the best ways to prevent weeds from infesting your lawn throughout the year is to apply a preemergent with fertilizer application on your lawn early in the season before the seeds have a chance to germinate. This will help you so you don't have to play catch up the rest of the year and reduce your need for expensive herbicides. Like the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". As always, make sure to read the product label and follow the instructions before applying.
