The homeowner of the Brazilian Cherry Job I did last year reached out about a peculiar issue, so I went back to take a closer look.

Oil finishes can be a little tricky, and in this case, there were footprints showing up consistently. No amount of cleaning would keep new ones from appearing. With experience comes understanding.

Remembering that the floor was really cold (mid 50s) while applying Odie's Oil equated to leaving product behind. Fixing it required bringing a food-grade citrus dissolver with the active ingredient D-limonene (and smells very citrusy by the way).

A light buffing with the dissolver was able to remove the excess oil from the surface and keep those footprints from coming back so often.

Along the way, I picked up a couple new lessons that I’ll carry into future projects. I’ve always believed in standing behind my work. If something isn’t right, I’m willing to come back, dig into the why, and make it right for the homeowner.

Back at The Fight Revisited project in Coeur d’Alene, working on one of the less glamorous but most important parts of the job.

Right now, I’m grinding the concrete flat on the main floor.

It’s slow, dusty work, but getting the substrate right is what everything else depends on.

If the substrate isn’t flat, nothing that comes after it will be either, which can lead to hollow spots, squeaky boards, broken tongues, and possibly wobbly furniture.

The custom hardwood handrail was finished with ProCoat UnoCoat hardwax oil to match the flooring below.

Wood and metal always work well together when the details are right, and this railing ties the whole project together.

It’s satisfying to wrap up a job that’s evolved over time and leave it better than I found it.

The Loon Lake project is officially complete.

This one stretched over time and included a little bit of everything. Sanding and refinishing the existing basement floor, patching where walls were moved, installing new hardwood upstairs, and finishing things off with a custom hardwood handrail over wrought iron balusters.

I’m grateful for long-time clients who trust me enough to keep bringing me back. Seeing all the pieces come together like this is always rewarding.

The Beech floor project in Post Falls wrapped up nicely.

After the final buffing off of Odie's Oil, I grabbed a few final photos, and it’s always satisfying to see a floor reach that last stage.

Solid work, clean details, and a finish that lets the wood speak for itself.

It’s always great being a part of the Wright Brothers Remodeling and Sunrooms. The team is filled with good people who are so nice to work with.

At the Spokane Preservation Advocates event I attended earlier this year, I ran into Pat, the owner of 509 Garage. Pat asked me to refinish the floors in a rental home he and his wife own in West Central Spokane.

It’s about 800 square feet of old fir flooring that’s been sanded before, so I’m taking it slow to preserve as much as possible. The wood looks like two different species, but it’s really just different cuts showing their character.

The floor needed some holes patched and old patches redone. The wood is old-growth fir from the early to mid-1900s, and the wood I patch with should match from the same era. You just can’t go and buy it. Luckily, Andrey Grebenshchikov from AG Elite Floor Design had some aged flooring in his stores and gifted me some to make this patchwork. Thanks, Andrey!!!

We’ll be doing a matte natural finish to let the original floor glow again.

(These pics show the progress from patchwork to nearly finished.)

I’ve been back out at the Liberty Lake project, and most of the big work is wrapped up.

I’m waiting on a high-gloss finish to arrive so I can redo a section of the floor I wasn’t happy with. Waterborne finishes dry fast, and this one reminded me why patience matters.

In the meantime, I’ve been focusing on the handrail. It’s a detailed piece that needs to tie the whole space together, so I’ve been taking the time to get the shape, fit, and feel just right. Good handrails look simple, but they take a lot of careful work to get that clean, seamless result.

Once the last coat goes on, I hope to share pictures of the final product.

Every job teaches me something new. This squeaky floor project reminded me how important precision and patience are in solving the small things that make a big difference.

To settle down a squeaky floor, sometimes I’ll even use a metal detector and a stethoscope to find hidden nails and pinpoint problem spots. It’s not flashy work, but it’s rewarding, especially when a client walks across the floor and realizes it’s completely quiet.

Squeaky floors are one of those things homeowners tend to accept as normal. But they don’t have to be.

Recently, I helped a massage therapist whose workroom had squeaky hardwood floors. The room was beautiful, but the creaks made it hard to keep the space peaceful. (I posted about this last week, too!)

The first step was finding the source. Using a deep stud finder(2” depth), I located each joist beneath the floor. I inserted special “squeaky screws” designed to stabilize the three layers, not allowing the squeaky nail to move. These screws snap off 3/16” below the surface, leaving a fillable 1/8” hole and no noise.

By the end, more than 150 screws were hidden underfoot. The floor looked untouched, and best of all, it was silent.

Think squeaky floors are just something you have to live with?

If your home has a few loud, creaky spots, you probably know exactly where they are. They are the boards that announce every step you take.

But here’s the thing: squeaky wood floors can be fixed. And it doesn’t always require tearing the floor apart or replacing anything.

Squeaks happen when there’s movement between the layers of your floor: boards, subfloor, or joists. Over time, houses settle, nails loosen, and wood expands or contracts.

The good news? With the right tools and a little patience, those sounds can be silenced.

I'll be posting about this project next week, but you can read the full blog post here: https://ouradadesigns.com/can-you-fix-squeaky-wood-floors

In the middle of all the other projects I have going on, I made time the past few weeks to work on a project at my own home. I spent the summer doing prep work on the exterior so I could pour a concrete walkway around my place. It’s not woodworking, but a chance to dust off my general contractor skills and take care of a project at home.

Back in Post Falls, working on a change order for the client. The client had a new fire placed, which bumped out the framing a few inches. This required pushing out the picture framing for the hearth tile that will eventually go in. So, I took out the old boards and replaced them with new old boards (saved from the demo) at the correct distance.
