One of the most underrated parts of roof sales is communication.

We understand that not every homeowner we meet with is going to choose us. Maybe you decided not to do the project. Maybe you went with another contractor. Maybe the timing just isn’t right.

That’s completely okay.

What’s tough is getting ghosted after we’ve inspected the property, taken photos, reviewed the damage, answered questions, worked through the insurance process, put together estimates, and followed up.

You don’t owe us the job. But a simple, “Hey, we decided to go another direction” goes a long way.

Good salespeople aren’t looking to pressure you into changing your mind. We just want to know where things stand so we can respect your decision and move on.

Communication works both ways. I expect myself to answer calls, return messages, keep customers updated, and do what I say I’m going to do.

All I ask for in return is the same courtesy.

And trust me, “No” is always better than no response.

You really never know what you’re going to find until the tear-off starts. 🤦‍♂️

A friend of mine, Jacob with Shamrock Roofing, sent me this from a job they tore off today.

They removed the shingles and found what looked like a normal roof deck underneath. But after digging into it a little further, they discovered something crazy:

There was ANOTHER layer of shingles underneath the decking.

At some point, a previous roofer decided to install new decking directly over the old shingle roof, then install another roof on top of that.

Instead of tearing the old roof down to the original deck and doing the job correctly, they literally buried an entire roof underneath a new one.

This is exactly why the lowest bid isn’t always the cheapest roof. You might save money today, but shortcuts like this eventually become somebody else’s very expensive problem.

Big thanks to Jacob at Shamrock for sending this one over. Definitely one of the crazier things I’ve seen buried underneath a roof.

Brand new doesn’t always mean it’s done right.

This roof is brand new, but during this heavy rain it was obvious the water wasn’t draining into the gutter the way it should.

Sometimes it takes one good storm to expose issues you can’t see on a sunny day. A roof isn’t just shingles. Every component has to work together to properly manage water.

Attention to detail is what separates a roof that simply looks good from one that actually performs.

If you’re investing in a new roof, don’t settle for “good enough.” Make sure it’s installed by someone who understands the entire roofing system.

Because the rain doesn’t care if the roof is new. It only cares if it was installed correctly.

It’s been a while since I last posted, but today was one of those jobs that reminds us why doing things the right way matters.

The homeowner told us their roof had been replaced just a few years ago, and they believed everything had been done correctly. Once we tore it off, we found three layers of underlayment and roof decking that had been deteriorating for years underneath. From the ground, everything looked fine. Underneath, it was a completely different story.

Unfortunately, the homeowner had no way of knowing. They trusted the people they hired, just like anyone would.

Roofing isn’t just about making a house look good from the street. It’s about protecting a family’s biggest investment. That means being honest when unexpected problems are found, communicating every step of the way, and fixing the issues correctly instead of covering them up.

We believe every homeowner deserves to understand what’s happening on their roof. We document what we find, explain the options, and never cut corners just to get to the next job.

Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t the cheapest or the fastest option, but it’s always the one we’d want for our own family.

If you’re hiring a roofer, don’t just ask about the shingles. Ask what’s underneath. Ask how they’ll handle hidden damage. Ask questions until you’re comfortable.

A roof should be built to last, not just long enough to cash the check.

We’re grateful this homeowner trusted us to make it right.

🚨 THIS IS WHY I LOOK UNDER THE SHINGLES 🚨

At first glance this roof looked normal.

But after carefully lifting the shingles and underlayment at the eave, I found something interesting…

There appears to still be old felt attached to the drip edge.

That raises an important question:

Was the drip edge actually replaced during the previous roof install… or was it reused?

I can’t say that from photos alone, but findings like this are exactly why I inspect instead of assuming.

Details matter.

When a roof is replaced, I want to verify:
✔️ Proper tear off
✔️ Correct drip edge installation
✔️ Proper underlayment sequence
✔️ Clean installation surfaces
✔️ Manufacturer installation requirements

Most homeowners never get to see what’s under their shingles. If it looks new, they assume everything underneath was done correctly.

That isn’t always the case.

This isn’t about calling out another contractor. It’s about making sure what’s underneath matches what was promised.

The details you can’t see are often the ones that matter most.

⛈️ Storm Damage? Protect Your Home While You Wait.

After a storm, roofing companies can be booked out for days or even weeks. That doesn’t mean your home has to sit exposed while waiting on a replacement.

Temporary protection can make a huge difference in preventing:
• Interior water damage
• Saturated decking and insulation
• Mold growth
• Additional insurance headaches
• Small issues turning into major repairs

This roof was temporarily protected to help keep water out until permanent repairs can be completed.

If your roof took hail or wind damage, don’t assume waiting is your only option. Have it inspected, document everything, and make sure vulnerable areas are sealed and protected properly.

A temporary repair isn’t the final fix, but it can buy valuable time and help prevent further damage.

Insurance scopes are a starting point, not the final answer.

Before this roof gets approved and scheduled, we performed a full inspection to verify the insurance estimate matched real-world conditions.

What we found:
✔️ 2 layers of roofing present
✔️ Existing Impact Resistant Owens Corning Duration shingles
❌ Neither item was included on the original insurance scope

That’s exactly why inspections matter.

If you only rely on the paperwork and never verify what’s physically installed, important details can get missed. Layer count affects tear-off and disposal. Existing material type can affect replacement pricing and scope.

This roof hasn’t started yet. Catching these items now gives us the opportunity to document conditions properly and submit for review before materials are ordered and work begins.

A good contractor doesn’t just install roofs. A good contractor verifies the scope before the first shingle comes off.

Inspect first. Build second.
Because what’s on the roof doesn’t always match what’s on the estimate.

THIS roof completely changed the look of this home.

Just finished installing this beautiful Owens Corning Duration FLEX roof in Estate Gray and the results turned out incredible.

Not only does it look clean and modern, but this homeowner now has a roof built to handle Missouri weather with upgraded impact resistance and long-term performance.

A lot of people think a roof is just shingles. It’s not.

The difference is in the details:
✔ Full system installation
✔ Proper ventilation
✔ Clean flashing work
✔ Attention to every finish detail

If your roof has been through hail, wind, or you’ve been putting off getting it looked at, now is the time to find out what your options are.

No pressure. No gimmicks. Just honest inspections and quality work.

REDECKS MATTER.

This is what a roof looks like when we get down to the decking layer. A lot of people think shingles are the roof, but shingles are only as good as what’s underneath them.

When decking is damaged, spaced too wide, deteriorated, soft, or no longer meets manufacturer requirements, installing new shingles over the top can lead to:
• Nail blow-through
• Reduced wind resistance
• Uneven roof appearance
• Shortened shingle life
• Possible warranty concerns
• Future leaks and costly repairs

A redeck isn’t an “upsell.” It’s making sure the roof system has a solid foundation before the new roofing materials go on.

You wouldn’t build a house on a weak foundation. Your roof works the same way.

If your contractor never checks the decking during tear-off, ask why.
