Lydia's bathroom is one step closer to done waterproofing's in, and the niche problem is solved.

We hit a snag with two support beams that couldn't move, which would've boxed in a single niche. Instead of forcing it, we stacked two tiled niches vertically — same storage, and honestly it looks better than the one big cutout would've.

Brackets for the new makeup counter are set and ready. Drywall goes in today, tile and countertops are on deck for next week.

Brian caught up with Lydia on camera for a quick progress check — and a reminder to enjoy this cooler stretch of weather while it lasts. ☀️

A big room can still feel unfinished when the walls are left plain.

In this home, custom wainscoting runs the length of the living space and wraps around the windows, while boxed columns help define the open floor plan without making it feel closed in.

The difference is in the consistency balanced panel proportions, layered trim, substantial baseboards, and column caps that all work together as one design.

Nothing flashy. Just thoughtful trim work that makes the entire room feel more complete.

This built-in wasn't just designed to look good it was built to survive a house full of kids.

This is one of Brian's favorite projects, and it's easy to see why. The mudroom cabinet on the right was engineered to take a beating shoes flying, backpacks slamming, whatever a busy household throws at it and still look this clean years from now. It was built in two pieces to get it into place, then assembled on site.

The wood accent is hand-milled, rough-cut vertical-grain fir, grain-wrapped and miter-folded in our own shop and the window bench right across the room was built the exact same way, from the same rough stock. Same technique, same wood, both built in-house. That's the kind of detail that doesn't show up in a walk-through, but it's the difference between a mudroom that looks nice on day one and one that still looks right five years in.

Everyday function, built to last. That's the goal every time.

Here's a number worth knowing before you write a deposit check: California caps home improvement down payments at 10% of the total price, or $1,000 — whichever is less.

So on a $30,000 project, the most you should be asked for upfront is $1,000. Not $3,000. Not "half down to get started."

If a contractor's asking for more before any work has happened, that's worth a second look. Send us the numbers if you want us to check them.

A bathroom renovation starts long before the new tile goes in.

Day 1 on the Willowbrook project was all demo and site prep. The old fiberglass tub and shower came out, we capped the tub plumbing, and got the space ready for what's coming: a half-wall, fully tiled shower with frameless glass.

The vanity is staying put, but it's getting reworked top to bottom — new doors and drawers, a quartz countertop with a waterfall edge, and its own makeup area with a mirror and dedicated lighting. We're adding custom open shelving and a drawer bank right beside it, plus new flooring to finish the room out.

Kept the dust contained inside the bathroom as best we could through the tear-out — the rest of the house doesn't need to deal with that mess.

Brian walks through the whole plan in the video, room by room, so you can see exactly where this bathroom is starting and where it's headed.

Day 1 is always the ugly part. The fun stuff comes next.

This dining room started with one plain wall and the homeowner wanted it to feel finished without making the room busy.

The answer was custom box trim.

Each section was laid out to keep the spacing consistent from floor to ceiling, giving the wall more depth and detail while still keeping the room clean and understated.

It’s one of those projects where nothing has to be oversized or complicated. Good layout, clean lines, and the right proportions can completely change how a room feels.

We'll remodel your kitchen isn't a scope of work — it's a place holder.

A solid contract gets specific: materials, measurements, exactly whats being built and how. When that details missing, you and the contractor can end up with two very different ideas of what you agreed to usually discovered halfway through the job.

If your contracts scope section feels thin, its worth asking for more before you sign. Happy to take a look if you want a second opinion.

A plain hallway wall can become one of the first things you notice when you walk through the front door.

This Menifee hallway started with simple painted drywall and a lot of empty wall space. We added painted wainscoting with clean rectangular panels, a defined top rail, and substantial base trim to give the hallway some structure without making it feel busy.

The finished panels run along both sides of the entry, tying the hallway together and working with the existing crown molding and flooring.

It's a good example of what custom trim can do: you don't have to change the layout of a room to make it feel more finished — you can change how the space is framed.

**Sometimes the best new detail in a home has already had a life somewhere else.**

We took a trip through an architectural salvage shop and found quite a collection of old-school craftsmanship—vintage doors, stained glass, hardware, switch plates, cabinets, and plenty of pieces you just don't see made the same way anymore.

Some of these pieces show years of use, but that's exactly what makes them interesting. The old joinery, woodwork, hardware, and glass have character that can't simply be replicated by buying something new off the shelf.

For a carpenter, places like this are dangerous territory… because you start thinking of about 47 projects before you even make it to the checkout. 😂

Architectural salvage can be a great option when you're looking for a one-of-a-kind piece for a remodel, built-in, accent wall, door, or custom project.

California law requires a written contract for any home improvement job over $500 — that's not a nice-to-have, it's the law. It should show the contractor's name, business address, and CSLB license number, and you should have a signed copy in hand before any work starts.

If someone's ready to start without that paperwork, that's worth pausing on.
