The cold weather is upon us and there are some things you can do to ensure your pipes don't freeze and your heat stays working! Andrew, one of our technicians, was pictured in the Sun Chronicle about the cold weather and frozen pipes today! Check out the article or see some tips below that could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs:
1) If you have a forced hot water system, make sure to TURN ON ALL heat zones. Many of you have finished basements or 4 season rooms. Often the pipes that feed the baseboard radiators run near unheated and poorly insulated spaces. Leaving the zone off will cause the water to freeze in those cold spots.
2) Crank it up! Turn up your heat 5 to 10 degrees above your normal thermostat settings during this extreme cold and wind. This will ensure your system runs more often and should prevent the water in those pipes from freezing.
3) If you have water pipes running in or near outside walls like under kitchen sinks or laundry rooms etc, keep your cabinet doors OPEN! This will allow the heat to reach those cold areas and prevent freezing.
4) If you have known cold spots or areas that have frozen in the past, a space heater will go a long way to help keep that area warm.
5) If you have a finished basement with drop ceilings, open up those ceiling tiles that are below kitchen or bathroom areas. This will allow the heat to get up above the ceiling and keep those pipes from freezing.
6) Make sure all hoses are disconnected from the outside spigots and the inside water has been turned off and properly drained.
Please stay warm and safe!
