Apologies for the long time between posts, things have been busy around here! Today we held our first Pacific Inside Electrical JATC apprentice skills contest in 15 years! The last time we held this (previously) annual event was in 2010. The contestants are our upper term apprentices and events include an electrical code test, residential wiring, material identification, and conduit bending (including an attempt at The Ruiner, photo below). We are looking forward to continuing this event next year.

The weather in Coos Bay was sunny and pleasant and this was a good way to kick off the upcoming summer break. Thank you to Training Director Niq Brening for coordinating the event, IBEW Local 932 officers, JATC committee members, our classroom instructors, our affiliated electrical contractors/training agents, and our apprenticeship partners at Oregon Pacific Cascade Chapter of NECA for participating, and Platt Electric Supply for donating prizes and new hand tools for our apprentices.

Last day of class is June 5th, work safe over the summer

There is a significant power outage on the Central Oregon Coast tonight, reportedly due to tree(s) down on the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) transmission lines serving the coast from the Willamette Valley. Follow Central Lincoln PUD for updates. Stormy conditions appear to be set to go all night.

This is a good time to remind folks that illegal DIY generator hookups can potentially backfeed the grid or cause other genuine hazards to yourself, neighbors, and line workers. Have a professional electrical contractor evaluate your generator needs to ensure a safe, code-compliant installation.

We had a good time at Oregon Coast Community College CTE Day today, talking to visitors about electrical apprenticeship. Thank you to retired IBEW Local 280 Business Manager and Wireman Tim Frew for volunteering his time to help out!

The NEC Calculations Refresher class scheduled for December 7, 2024 is cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with apprenticeship interviews.

We will be developing a new continuing education schedule for 2025 sometime around the new year, and this class will be at the top of the list for rescheduling. Please keep an eye on CE class announcements for 2025 coming soon.
