The progress at NorthCanton CitySchools New Middle School really offers you a feel for the full size of the new school! The exterior has really taken shape and our excitement grows as we see each of the details being added daily to fill in the full picture.

Adaptive Reuse - A New Chapter for Familiar Places
Most communities have buildings that people recognize long before they know their history. An old school overlooking the town square. An industrial building that recalls the region’s manufacturing roots. A downtown storefront that has served generations of residents. When those buildings outlive their original purpose, communities face a difficult question: What comes next?

At SōL Harris/Day, we see that question as an opportunity. Adaptive reuse allows us to work with the character, resources, and history already present in a building while preparing it for a different future. It requires imagination, careful evaluation, and a willingness to work through challenges that are rarely apparent from the sidewalk.

Three projects—25 Public Square in Willoughby, the Firestone Triangle Building in Akron, and the Coshocton Collaborative—illustrate how that process can create housing, support public services, and provide places for new businesses to grow. Our team recently traveled to Austin, Texas, for an inspiring look at the innovation, creativity, and craftsmanship behind Wilsonart products!

They kicked off the trip with a tour of the Ralph Wilson House, where the founder of Wilsonart put laminate to the test in real-world applications. From walls finished entirely in laminate to creative applications throughout the home, the house showcases the versatility and possibilities of the material.

At the Wilsonart Austin showroom, they explored the latest products and innovations during a product fair, learning from team members across multiple divisions about new materials, applications, and design opportunities. They also toured manufacturing facilities to see firsthand how laminate, Wet Wall, and solid surface products are made.

Of course, no trip to Austin would be complete without exploring its architecture! Our team visited the Austin Central Library, recognized among the nation’s top 25 buildings, and experienced the city’s unique architectural character along the way.

Several of our designers traveled to the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. This conference brings together industry leaders, innovators, and design professionals to explore the latest advancements in sustainable building, decarbonization, energy efficiency, resilient design, and innovative materials. From educational sessions to cutting-edge technologies, our team is utilizing these valuable opportunities to share ideas, gain insights, and discover innovative solutions. We’re excited to see how this will inspire our designs!

⛳ A day on the course, plenty of laughs, and a little friendly competition! Our annual company golf outing was another great opportunity to enjoy time together outside the office and share a few laughs along the way. Congratulations to Westbrook Country Club for winning third place from Golf Inc. Magazine's Clubhouse Renovation category! What an honor to be recognized for this award.
