Join Arborist Matthew Largess on a spring guided walk in honor of Arbor Day ~

Saturday, April 25th
1:30pm

Smith's Castle
55 Richard Smith Drive
North Kingstown, RI 02852

Link below to sign-up with a small donation to Smith's Castle!

Guided by Arborist Matt Largess and Public Historian Bob Geake, you will walk the trails that the indigenous peoples formed centuries ago and people still walk today.

Roots & Routes is about discovering Smith’s Castle not just as a historic building, but as a living landscape. The ‘roots’ represent both the native plants that have grown here for centuries and the deep cultural roots of the people connected to this land. The ‘routes’ are the paths walked over time — by Indigenous communities, early settlers, farmers, and visitors today. Each walk invites people to experience history underfoot, connecting nature, place, and story in a way you can only understand by walking the grounds. It’s history you don’t just learn — it’s history you experience!

ALIEN INVASION!

White ash, Fraxinus americana, trees are critically endangered at this time, due to the invasion of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), a shiny green metallic beetle. EAB lays its eggs in the bark crevices of ash trees. The larvae burrow into the tree and feed on the inner bark and phloem, creating S-shaped markings. They pupate in winter and emerge as adults in spring, leaving D-shaped exit holes. The adults remain active until the end of summer. It is devastating to see the amount of trees that are dying in both yards and forest, but we are having proven success with tree root treatments with support from Virginia Tech University. Like vaccinations, these can help prevent or treat infections, if done early enough. Contact us for a free check-up on your trees.

Fun fact: Northern flying squirrels make their homes in ash trees. They are rarely seen due to their nocturnal, arboreal nature.

The snow cover of this historically cold winter is so beneficial and protective to tree roots. The coming spring will be stunning, with lower disease and insect populations.

Call Matt Largess & Team to take a close look at your trees and landscape and assess for frost cracks and wind damage. The shrubs have taken a hit from snow weight. Remember to preserve your native trees and shrubs as much as possible. Winter is the best time to prune.
