Summer has officially been here for several days but we usually have these temperatures long before now. Unfortunately our southern turf is off to a late start still but guarantee we are doing what we can to encourage healthy growth after the long cool spring. Irrigation should now be watering 3 times a week for long periods to encourage deeper roots which will help your turf fair better in the upcoming hot/dry weather. Also mowing once a week is highly recommended and for Bermuda, if possible twice a week.

There is little question, the cool spring has been a challenge for warm-season grasses. They have been slow to green up and get in their summer growth pattern. Now, on top of all of the warm-season woes, we are finding some winter injury on Bermudagrass. North-facing slopes, shade lines, wet soils,....

With soil temperatures being lower than the 5/10 year average we are not seeing the normal growth and recovery coming out or dormancy this year. Hopefully Mother Nature will wake up and give us some hot/long days☀️ to kick our warm season turfs into gear.

***ALERT***

We have seen ground pearl in several neighborhoods lately and unfortunately there is no chemical control for this scale insect. If you notice this small pink pebble like looking insect scattered across your lawn we recommend a sod change (Zoysia and Bermuda are recommended) in areas with noticeable damage. Ground pearl weakens the turf and makes it more susceptible to damage from winter/drought which destroys the stressed grass. A good watering and cutting schedule to keep the lawn healthy as possible is highly recommended.

Persistent dead spots that expand outward around 1′ each year are a symptom of ground pearl infestation. The most lethal pest of lawn grasses in our area is also one of the least well known. Called ground pearl or pearl bugs, these insects can be found damaging lawns throughout coastal North Carol...

We are noticing a decent amount of winter damage this year. We usually get some winterkill every year but this year we have gotten quite a bit more because of the winter and spring temperatures.

Zoysiagrass rejoins with its brother centipedegrass after being released from winter dormancy, but the duo has just days to reunite their stolons and rhizomes and save the home lawn where the two were raised, outrunning the bugs and crud as they tear through suburban lawns. All jokes aside, we have....

Unfortunately Mother Nature has not been kind this year. We have noticed a good amount of winter damage, especially in Centipede lawns. Now is the time to increase watering to 2-3 days a week and hopefully we will start to see an rise in temperature to help with recovery.

This spring has not been overly kind to our warm-season grasses—centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass. The last couple of weeks, we have been seeing a good bit of desiccation injury in turfgrasses. The symptoms are sometimes thought to be from disease or insect damage, but ...

Over the past several weeks we finally got some good growing weather and the lawns are growing fast. Be sure that your lawn receives at least 1” of water a week during these dry periods to help maintain color and growth.
