Have you heard of the Adak National Forest? Adak National Forest is America’s smallest national forest, comprising 33 evergreens. During World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army occupied the two westernmost Aleutian Islands. In response, the U.S. military established an airbase at Adak. To boost morale, General Buckner initiated a tree planting initiative, planting some “Christmas trees.” On a whim, soldiers erected a sign reading, “You are now entering and leaving the Adak National Forest.” It is believed that the locals decorate the forest every December.
