Most people think spray foam insulation is the best thing they can do for their home.

Sometimes, it’s exactly what destroys the roof.

In this video, Cody Grimsrud breaks down a roof system that was failing because heat had nowhere to go. The attic was fully encapsulated with spray foam, ventilation was eliminated, and the roof assembly was paying the price.

To solve the problem, we built a ventilated air space above the existing roof deck using furring strips, a new deck, and ridge ventilation to create what is essentially a mini attic system.

Topics covered:
• Why roofs need ventilation
• How trapped heat affects roofing materials
• Why some roofing warranties can be voided
• The solution we used to restore airflow
• What homeowners should know before spray foaming an attic

In this clip from the Hard Work Pays Off podcast, we discuss a unique situation involving spray foam attic insulation and the problems it can create. We talk about how encapsulating an attic with spray foam creates a conditioned space, which has benefits but also significant drawbacks, particularly how it voids shingle manufacturer warranties and can cause roofing issues that aren't advertised upfront. While some manufacturers have made concessions in recent years, most still void their performance warranties when spray foam insulation is used.

Ask yourself this. Do you know the condition of your roof right now? Storm damage is not always obvious from the ground. Getting clarity early can save you time, money, and stress.

Start with a simple walk-around. Look for missing shingles, lifted edges, dents on metal, or debris on the roof. Check ceilings inside for water spots or new stains. Take photos right away. Capture everything you see, even if it looks minor. This helps if you need to file a claim later. Clear what you safely can. Remove small branches or debris from gutters and downspouts. Leave anything heavy or dangerous for professionals. Do not wait on small issues. A minor puncture or loose flashing can turn into a leak fast. Quick action keeps repair costs down. If you suspect damage, schedule a professional inspection. A trained eye can spot problems you might miss and document everything properly.

We’re getting ready to kick off a new project at San Marcos Baptist Academy. Working on an active campus requires precision. Students are in class. Staff are moving throughout the day. Operations can’t stop. That’s why everything starts with a clear plan. We map out access points, staging areas, material delivery, and crew flow before the first day on site. Every step is designed to reduce disruption and keep the campus safe. The focus stays simple. Keep daily life moving while the project stays on schedule. Strong planning and logistics make that possible.
