Most people think spray foam insulation is the best thing they can do for their home.
Sometimes, it’s exactly what destroys the roof.
In this video, Cody Grimsrud breaks down a roof system that was failing because heat had nowhere to go. The attic was fully encapsulated with spray foam, ventilation was eliminated, and the roof assembly was paying the price.
To solve the problem, we built a ventilated air space above the existing roof deck using furring strips, a new deck, and ridge ventilation to create what is essentially a mini attic system.
Topics covered:
• Why roofs need ventilation
• How trapped heat affects roofing materials
• Why some roofing warranties can be voided
• The solution we used to restore airflow
• What homeowners should know before spray foaming an attic
