With the extreme cold weather we will be having the next several days, plumbing companies often get overwhelmed with emergency calls of frozen and burst water lines. Below are some suggestions to help this from not happening to your home.
1. Familiarize yourself to where your main water shut off is located in the event of an emergency. In most homes in Cleveland and surrounding suburbs, this is usually located in the basement near the front wall of the house.
2. For plumbing that is located near an exterior wall, open cabinet doors to allow heat from your home to circulate around the water lines.
3. In extreme conditions, you can slightly open a faucet to allow a trickle of water flow. This constant movement of water will help to mitigate the water from freezing.
4. Make sure that all outside hoses have been disconnected from the hose spigots and ensure that the inside isolation valve is shut off to all outside spigots.
5. If you do experience a frozen pipe, a hair dryer can be used in the area where it’s frozen. Never use an open flame to try and thaw out the pipe.
6. If you do experience a frozen or burst water line emergency, feel free to reach out. We will be happy to help. Stay warm!
