Just got hit with rain? Here's what your pool needs.

Storms do more to a pool than just fill it up. Rainwater dilutes your chlorine, and it drags dirt, pollen, and debris in off the deck and the yard. A day or two later, that's when the water turns cloudy or green.

Here's the quick checklist after a good rain:

✅Skim and empty the baskets. Leaves and debris sink fast and stain if left sitting.

✅Check your water level. If it's above the middle of the skimmer, drain a little so it can circulate properly.

✅Run the pump longer. Give it a few extra hours to filter out what the storm brought in.

✅Test your chemistry.

✅Brush the walls and floor. Especially the steps and corners where runoff settles.

Do this, and you'll usually stay ahead of it. Skip it, and a green pool by the weekend is a real possibility.

Alkalinity is your pool's buffer system.

It's what keeps your pH from swinging wildly every time you add a chemical. Get this one right, and everything else gets easier.

Total alkalinity — measured in ppm:
🟠 Low — below 80: pH swings unpredictably with every chemical you add, hard to keep balanced.
🟢 Ideal — 80–120 ppm: pH stays stable and easy to manage.
🔴 High — above 120: pH gets "stuck" high, water turns cloudy, and scale builds up over time.

What's really going on with your pool?

A quick guide to the most common pool problems we see:

Cloudy Water — Low chlorine, dirty filter, or bad pH → Test your water & run the filter longer

Green Water — Algae taking over from low chlorine → Brush it, shock it & run the pump longer

Strong Chlorine Smell — Your chlorine is used up, not too strong → Shock the pool to refresh it

Itchy Skin / Red Eyes — Your water is out of balance → Rebalance the water

White Scale Buildup — Hard water leaving mineral deposits → Rebalance the water, or drain & refill some

Rust / Metal Stains — Metal (iron or copper) in the water → Use a vitamin C stain remover.
