🚧🚧 BELOW THE SURFACE | Directional Drilling

You may see our crews and equipment working above ground, but a lot of the work is actually happening below the surface.

Directional drilling allows us to install conduit underground with minimal disruption to the surface. Instead of digging an open trench from point A to point B, a directional drill creates an underground path that allows conduit to be pulled through.

This method helps us cross beneath roads, driveways, sidewalks, and other areas while keeping surface disturbance to a minimum.

There's a lot more happening underground than what you can see from the road!

We’re kicking off a new series here at Midwest Contractors!

There’s a lot that goes into underground utility construction that most people never see – or may simply have questions about. Below the Surface will give you a closer look at what our crews do, why we do it, and some of the things you may see while we’re working in your community.

And what better place to start than with one of the questions our crews hear most often….
“Why are you working in my yard?”

💡 Know the ROW

So, why are we in “your yard?” That strip of grass may look like part of your yard – and you may mow and maintain it – but a portion of it may fall within the city’s public right-of-way.

Public right-of-way areas are designated spaces where authorized utility work can legally take place – often including portions of your yard. These areas allow essential infrastructure like electric, water, gas, and communication lines to be installed and maintained.

We know having construction around your home can be inconvenient – and we understand why seeing crews and equipment in your yard can raise questions. Our crews work within the designated route, navigate around existing utilities, and do their best to minimize disruption along the way.

And when the work is done? Areas disturbed by our construction are restored as the project progresses.
