Every job is different. When you get estimates for your project, especially at your house, it's very important that the estimator isn't measuring everything with a tape measure or a laser. This means that they are putting some or all of the work, in the same category as every other job of that type. So, for example..... If it's $3.25 per square foot to scrape, patch, and repaint a wall, then odds are the estimator might be applying the same price to an area that just needs a coat of paint. If they are using square foot measurements to estimate your project, make sure they are using the correct scale. Most experienced painters won't have to measure every part of a project. This will enable the contractor to give you a better price, and more realistic timeframe for completing the work.
