When I was growing up, my grandfather had a lemon tree. It produced so much fruit he couldn’t even give it all away.

Today we hear about people struggling to put food on the table, but it makes me wonder, what if our cities put more focus on planting fruit-bearing trees instead of just ornamentals?

Yes, there’s maintenance involved, but think about the potential. My own backyard produces so many grapes that we can’t keep up with them, and I’ve got a blackberry bush that grows wild between the fence and the concrete. It produces a huge amount of food, year after year, with no real effort on my part.

Imagine if landscapes across town were designed with purpose, not just for appearance, but for survival. What if neighborhoods were lined with fruit trees, nut trees, and edible bushes instead of decorative plants? Not only would this add beauty, it would create a living safety net in times of shortage.

Right now, most of the foliage you see driving around is ornamental. It serves no purpose in a crisis. But if homeowners, schools, and even city planners pushed for edible landscapes, we’d build communities that could thrive when it mattered most.

A lemon tree. A grapevine. A berry bush. Small changes with a big impact. Maybe it’s time to rethink what we plant and start growing with survival in mind.
