To our valued customers:
As you may have heard, there is a perceived salt shortage in New York State which has caused many problems in both the private and public sectors.
Our current salt supplier cut us off from buying any additional salt three weeks ago due to the claim they had to sell their current supply to the current NYS OGS low bidder under the states’ orders so NYS can have all the salt they want (waste IMO). They have indicated that they do not expect this shortage to be resolved this season. I’ve seen this happen twice in the past 25 years. I thought I had taken the necessary precautions to be covered in an event like this, but my salt supplier, Cargill, lied to me. They courted us around eight years ago, advising that if we bought all our salt from them, they would make us a preferred customer. They guaranteed lower, locked-in pricing and advised they would never cut us off. Fast forward to 2025, and that promise is unfulfilled.
At the start of the season, we had our bins almost full. We had to buy more to finish the year out, so we secured another 240 tons of salt at a 208% price increase, which is price gouging, plain and simple. The current pricing is 313% higher than the preseason locked-in pricing, and we do not expect the State to step in and investigate the problem because ultimately, they are the ones who caused it.
While we are certainly unhappy about the situation, rest assured that we are doing all that we can to mitigate the impact on our customers. As in the past, we have not raised the price for our customers’ mid-season. That’s just not how my father taught us. You may, however, see an increase in the quantity of salt used on your bill. This is because the current product we are using is from another supplier, and not as effective as the locally sourced treated salt product that we normally use. Thankfully, as we move through the coming months, icing typically becomes less of an issue due to longer days, however, if the winter season extends into April, we may have to cut the salt with some traction products.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please know that we will be looking at additional alternative methods this off-season to avoid finding ourselves in this predicament again in the future.
